Default Microsoft is the target

http://ps3land.com/article-566.php

The above link talks about how microsoft is going to release an add-on for the xbox 360 to play HD-DVD's. The accessory will cost $500.00. If you add in the cost of the Xbox 360 console among other things, the total cost is $900.00, just $100.00 less then a blu-ray player. Everyone was complaining that paying $600.00 for a ps3 was crazy, but spending $900.00 for an xbox 360 add-on among other things is not as crzy as buying a ps3.

Hmm, $500? Very unlikely, I would expect it be around $100 - $150, meaning it will be slightly cheaper than the PS3 were you to buy a 360 with the add on drive.

No announcement on price and launch date have been set by MS yet though.

Update: Reports today suggest a $200 price

Yeah I've heard for awhile now that the price of the HD DVD addon will be around $199.

I've also heard several of the rumors about the HD DVD add on for the 360 as being about $199.

However, the only statement made by Microsoft at the time of the announcement was that it would be very competitively priced with respect to the then shipping stand alone HD DVD players. So it will be very competitively priced with regard to $500 players (unless they drop in price this fall).

So what is competitively priced versus $500?
$200?
$300?
$400?

We'll just have to wait until they announce the price.

It looks like Microsoft might take some hit from this, but it does give Sony a chance to recover from critisism.

Assuming there will be an xbox360 + HD-DVD bundle, if it comes in close to the price of a PS3, then hopefully a lot of people will wake up and realise that the PS3 is fairly priced for what you're getting.

I read that the add-on was more then the price of the ps3. I think that the ps3 is reasonably priced for what you pay for it. Everyone else seems to complain that paying $60.00 a game is a lot, but games have always been $60.00 at launch time, even back around 1996, the days of the Nintendo 64 and the ps1, games were $60.00. I think the expansion pack for the n64 was around $30.00 so you add in that plus $60.00 and you pay a lot. Fastforward to the present day and prices are still the same. Many times, when I sell games on ebay, I will make about the same price that I paid for the game, but sometimes I will make more. When you pay $60.00 for a ps3 game, what do you get? A good game that may sell well and is really fun to play.

but it is still optional so it wont really affect much....only if 360 owners will decide to buy it they will feel ripped off.....

Given the historical lows sales of add ons like this, it'll be interesting to see how many of these units they sell. That said, MS aren't revealing how many Xbox360's have sold so far, so they may not comment on sales for the add on drive either.

I would have thought that come Christmas time, Xbox360 owners will be more interested in new games than an add on drive that potentially has an uncertain future. If the format eventually fails, it will be completely useless. At least if blu-ray movies fail, the PS3 can still use the format for games.
