OH SHIT

This is spectacular news. I'll have to break my Umbrella boycott for this one.

Wow, big news for genre fans.

Vestron Video tried to give it a Re-Animator vibe for it's VHS release back in the day, though Death Warmed Up is nothing like Re-Animator.

Looking forward to this release

It's been at least 25 years since I've seen this, but I have to say: day 1.

Oh wow, I actually thought this would never happen cause I heard some original elements were lost?

Anyway, time to retire my NZ DVD which looks as though it was cobbled together from the Aus CBS/FOX vhs censored cut with gore inserts from the uncut NZ vhs...it looks about as awful as it sounds.

Is that a serious question or just a general jab and poke?

Do I really need to answer that, if you think it’s a joke more power to you

Well there's only been five posts, all of which are supportive of it's release. I think that answered your question.

Kiwi Splatter? On blu-ray?

BRING IT ON!

To those who’ve seen this film, is it as outrageous as Bad Taste or Braindead? I love those two (and will happily pay $60 each for them in a special edition), so if it’s as good, I’ll buy it!

Nothing is as outrageous as those. It's far more psychological in nature from what I recall, though there is definitely some gore in there.

Thanks! I’ll have a look!

Just one question about this release, why is the VHS version being included? Is this a situation similar to Razorback, where no film source is available of the uncut scenes? I may have to ask...

It looks that way, but in this case it was cut to get an R18+ after initially getting an RC. I've no idea whether those cuts carried over to the NZ release, all I can find for here is R16 for the VHS and DVD releases, maybe it didn't get a theatrical release? To make it even more confusing, the NZ OFLC database lists a runtime of 78 minutes, but IMDB says 85, so that's a big difference even if you account for PAL speedup.

Also, I found this article which explains that the original negative no longer exists. So we're probably getting the R-rated Aussie release, and the uncut NZ VHS as a bonus. There's also some more info here.

That sounds really bad to my ears. If that happens: I'm so out.

Even if this is the only way, I'd still buy it. Although, I would be concerned if the main feature is the cut version (with no lesser quality inserts), as I'm assuming that the cut version jumps all over the place with the cuts. We don't know that yet, so let's wait for a response...

I saw it on rental VHS here in England in 1985. The Umbrella trailer below reignited a few memories: a schoolboy at the beginning takes a shower and gets a needle up the bum and a drill through his skull; a mad doctor experiments in a remote hospital; 80s teens get involved; bikers hurtle down corridors.

I can't remember much about it other than schoolboy me (I was about 15) found it a bit bewildering. Hopefully I'll understand it better now.

The scissor-happy UK censor cut 29 seconds from the theatrical version and 54 seconds from the video (waived for the 1999 "sell-through" VHS), so hopefully this'll be uncut.

Default And the verdict is...

(Somewhat) UNCUT! The dude over at ex_film recently did a Instagram post about this blu-ray, and I asked him about the uncut scenes. He had this to say...

Quote:
nope, it's all scanned from 35mm. There are some moments which are trimmed, but strangely they don't contain any mayhem, just panning shots and second-unit sort of stuff. I included the full VHS/DVD cut as it contains all this stuff. David and Michael detail all this in their audio commentaries. How these cuts happened is a mystery but they suspect it was Murray Newey secretly doing some "tightening up".
So, rejoice! Certainly going to be a must-buy!

so what is WRONG with this Bluray? the "tightening up" coming up to 3-4 Minutes? that would be... not so great.

the Runtime suggest an uncut PAL 25fps Version, but it's encoded at 23.976 fps...

Length: 1:18:53.562
Total Bitrate: 38.94 Mbps
Video: MPEG-4 AVC Video / 32855 kbps / 1080p / 23.976 fps / 16:9 / High Profile 4.1 /

uncut NTSC VHS: 82:56 Mins

https://ssl.ofdb.de/view.php?page=fa...=634&vid=60247

uncut PAL VHS: 78:50 Mins

Those specs look ominous. What's the problem? 4 minutes cut? Incorrect PAL to FILM transfer? The Blu-ray is certainly cut, and it is seems that SD-inserts of the trimmed footage from the uncut VHS have *not* been included.

Seriously worried about this. Will wait for any and all reviews to see if this has been botched or not.

We have the Umbrella release, supposedly with the 78:53 runtime and 32855 kbps bitrate posted above, but how will the Severin release, scheduled to be released later this month stack up?
