Hope they can make room for some unrestored episodes with the grain intact but I guess that won’t happen.

If the grain comes
They run and hide their heads
They might as well be dead
If the grain comes
If the grain comes

When the grain shines
They slip into the shade
(Then the grain’s turned down)
And sip their lemonade
(Then the grain’s turned down)
When the grain shines
When the grain shiiiines

Gra a a a aiiin, I don't mind
Shii i i i ine, the Blu-ray’s fine

I can show you
That when it starts to grain
(When the grain comes down)
Everything's the same
(When the grain comes down)
I can show you
I can show youuuuuuu

Gra a a a aiiin, I don't mind
Shii i i i ine, the picture’s fine

Can you hear me?
That when it grains and shines

As I understand it, most of the footage was restored before it was edited together (at least, that was the process they did with the footage on They Shall Not Grow Old), so the cut would have to be rebuilt again with the unrestored footage. So no, it won't happen.

But I don't think it looks anywhere near as bad as people are making out, apart from a few shots (that may have looked bad in the unrestored footage, we don't know). It's not waxwork Arnie Predator.

You’re right, it’s not waxwork Arnie Predator. It’s worse than that.

Be nice to have the performances that play with the end credits as deleted scenes but unlikely. We should all be pleased its getting a disc release so soon I'am sure Apple Corps has alot to do with this. I cant see Disney wanting to put out a physical copy.

I guess I'm the lucky one then because I can enjoy it for what it is rather what it isn't. I'd much rather see this footage looking like this than have it locked up in a vault like it has been for 50 years and never get to see it at all.

I would love to see this pave the way for other Disney+ titles like the Star Wars and Marvel Studios series, or some of the films they’ve released, but I’m somehow doubtful.

I'm really pleased we got to see all this after all these years and the fact it was 3-parts with a long duration. I thoroughly enjoyed it from that aspect. But nothing high definition or filmic looking about the pictures sadly.

Yes, that's the common refrain, "I'm just glad to have it at all", and I get it. I do. For hardcore fans this is manna from heaven. I watched all 8 hours and was just as enthralled by watching the Beatles jamming as I was horrified by the DNR, as well as distracted by all the blatantly obvious bits where Jackson had manipulated the footage to try and make it match up to audio where they shot no film for it.

When it was over I still wanted another 8 hours of it, but that does not excuse PJ's perversions. It could just as easily have been presented much more sensitively with regard to the 16mm source (though I think they switched to 35 for the rooftop concert, it's not a coincidence that it's nowhere near as badly affected by the DNR as the rest of it) and people like yourself would still be enthralled by it, let's be honest. Prolly even come up with your own rationalisation like "it's old footage, they did what they could, I'm just glad to have it at all!", but what PJ has down is downright murderous to film and there was no justification apart from fulfilling his own personal hatred of film grain.

You could buy the DVD. The DNR wouldn't be as apparent on that.

Isn't compression an issue with streaming anyhow? Perhaps the physical release will look better? I'm sure PJ knows what he's doing and you have to respect the author's decisions.

I know, that's why I called it compression, not dnr. I'm suggesting that the compression of streaming isnt representative of what the disc will look like.

Sarcasm or not, I actually busted the resolution down to 576 when watching it. Made it look softer but in a good way, it ‘cut off’ some of the ghastly smudginess. Still looked wildly over-processed, just not as bad as watching it in HD.

But he’s not “the author”. He didn’t shoot this stuff 50 years ago. Instead he’s put it together 50 years later and imposed his own ghastly ideas of what it should look like upon it. Even just zooming it in to 1.78 is badly damaging as it’ll only embiggen the grain, I know the eventual idea was to have it go out as a feature blown up to 1.85 on 35mm anyway, but this was a chance to let the original 16mm aspect be, as it were. PJ ain’t got time for that though, everything’s about making it more “modern” and I wish someone would tell him enough is enough.

PS

It’s got absolutely nothing to with streaming compression, lolno

All good and fair points and I haven't seen it in any form so my opinion is merely speculation. I am looking forward to seeing this but I'm not sure how I'll feel about these apparent compromises. Obviously I know PJ didn't film the original 50+ hours of footage that underpinned his story but I would trust he adjusts the footage to tell that story and it is outside of his remit to present that original footage verbatim or consider this a "rescue" project. I like grain to bring life to imagery in a film but I don't know if I'd be personally concerned about grain or lack thereof in snippets interspersed with talking heads in a documentary context. Again I can't opine until I see the disc which as I said will only likely be better than any streamed edition. I agree discs like Predator are an abomination.
