Default Christopher Nolan and Paul Thomas Anderson Declare War on Motion Smoothing

Quote:
The War on Motion Smoothing has been raging for years, and while many Hollywood directors have spoken out against the consumer TV set before, the fight may finally be approaching its end.

High-profile directors Christopher Nolan and Paul Thomas Anderson have reached out to television manufacturers to ensure that audiences at home are able to see films presented as closely as possible to the director’s original intention, and a new “reference mode” will implement the results of a new director’s survey.

But he's completely right on this. Even a Nolan hater would agree that motion smoothing sucks.

Now let's do something about auto-dimming that can't be turned off.

I'm not a fan of motion smoothing either, but I dunno... something about this rubs me the wrong way, as does anything which typically involves rich, famous people doing their best to interfere with what the peasants are up to. It's like Jamie Oliver and his tendency to ban unhealthy foods. **** off and let me get fat, Jamie!

I've been on a crusade of my own against motion smoothing since... well, since it has imposed on us without anyone so much as asking if it was ok.

Motion smoothing is basically as it used to be called the "soap opera affect" right?

If so people need to educate themselves and realize you can turn that off on your TV. I put it on high when I watch sports but for movies I turn it off.

See if there is an option called auto motion plus in your advanced settings. Does your TV have the touch pad on the very bottom?

Just turn it off.

I'm more interest in when they'll declare what their next movies are gonna be.

Nothing hurts my heart more than walking into somebodies home and seeing the TV in Soap Opera mode....

I'd rather walk in on a girlfriend cheating on me..... lol

There are a lot more people out there than you think who don't make any adjustments to their TVs and just use the settings out of the box. They probably still have AOL too.

Whatever Nolan's next film will be, we'll already know it's going to be a masterpiece and a classic. PTA on the other hand...

The frame interpolation changes the artistic intention, made even worse by the bad side effects. I’m okay with native HFR though, if that’s how the filmmaker wanted it to be.

Did any of you read the actual article?

They're talking about having an industry approved auto calibration mode for movies which you can switch on separately in the TV.
