Default Computer to Receiver help?

Hello,

I'm currently working to hook my fiance's computer up to my old Denon Receiver but I'm having difficulty with getting any sound. I'm using a 3.5mm into RCA plugs. For some reason no sound is coming through. Might I me doing this wrong? Or might there be a bad sound card involved here? Or a setting I need to change on the receiver? I'm a little lost and I wasn't gonna stay up all night last night tinkering around. I figured to ask the experts around here. She did tell me her sound on the computer has been finicky lately, like her headphones and crap computer speakers. I haven't finished hooking up all the speakers as of yet, so far the front left and right and center are hooked up. Any thoughts?

do you have a pair of computer speakers and if so, when they are plugged into the 3.5 jack, do you get sound from them? if you do, then it's an issue with the receiver. if you don't, and you use to, then it's a pc issue.

some computers have a 3.5 jack and an optical and you have to tell the computer which one to send the sound to.

sometimes on computers (even my own once or twice) when switching the normal audio output, it will require a restart to kick in.

on the receiver, is the correct input selected and is that input assigned to analog (rca inputs) because it might be setup for audio from hdmi, optical or digital coax. sometimes you have to tell it where the audio is coming from.

best of luck, keep us posted.

Thanks for all the info....we'll be working on it tonight and this weekend and I'll check back with what happens or if I need further help. It's odd....I'm pretty good at home theater builds but involve a computer in the mix and I get turned around....

I use my desktop as a makeshift htpc and my video card has hdmi with built in audio decoder. So thats one option if you have a desktop is to upgrade video card?

Well, this is slightly embarrassing.... I hooked my tv up after checking connections and resigned input audio options and had it working in 5 seconds.... My fiance walked down to me jamming to the new Five finger death punch song, lift me up...
