Hulu's miniseries focused on Catherine the Great (on the same subject there's also a beautiful collaboration between Josef von Sternberg and Marlene Dietrich which I highly recommend).
The series is written by Tony McNamara (The Favourite) and stars Elle Fanning as Empress Catherine and Nicholas Hoult as Emperor Peter (probably his best role so far). Don't expect an 'usual' period drama, here McNamara opted for a different take, as explicitly stated in the tagline: an occasionally true story. History and characters are not 100% accurate, and also dialogues are represented mostly in a modern day language: there are not the usual refinements or 'aulic' words. As the genre demand, the historical setting and this particular lavish court is the perfects setback for an intriguing plot of scheming, betrayals, love (or sexual) traingles. McNamara just updates it, going fully tisted, wicked and fun. I've seen the first three episodes and I'm enjoying it very much! ![]() There was just an alienating effect at the very beginning, but after catching the right mood, I'm travelling on 1st class hypetrain. ![]() |
