Default How do you decide when/what to sell?

I've been looking at downsizing my collection, but I just can't bring myself to selling anything off for some reason unless it's a double dip. I feel like this has more to do with my packrat personality, because there are lots of things like random wristbands from events or handouts that I can't bring myself to throw out because of a faint glimmer of sentimentality.

Asking because I just bought a Star Trek steel for $35, which I think is my most expensive single out of pocket purchase in the better half of a year apart from my TV. So, when do you know to let go?

I never double dip but I don't know why you would need 2 copies of the same film.

If I blind buy something I don't like, I sell it. If I have something in my collection that I do not feel like I am going to watch ever again, I watch it one more time and if I still don't like it, I sell it.

It's that simple.

I'd rather die than sell my collection.

Ive double-dipped and triple-dipped but I always sell off the older copy and never keep it.

I decided to sell loads of DVDs a few years back when I could see how things were going to get with blus - that was a fair bit of work but it was worth it as I got pretty good prices for some of them.

Why? Answer that, and you'll likely have a path to deciding when/what to sell.

1) I almost always sell the DVDs out of combo packs unless it's a family/kids title. You'd be surprised how much a disc only will fetch for a new release.

2) If I replace a BD with better packaging then I will sell the old one.

3) If I replace a BD due to better PQ/AQ and/or a significant increase in extras I will sell the old one.

I only buy movies that I like so I have no reason in selling I prefer quality over quantity

I'm pretty much like everybody else that's responded... Why would ya need more than one copy of the same movie? Or movies that you don't like or plan to ever watch again for the sake of having them?

I understand that some have various versions because maybe one version has better PQ or AQ, or has extras that another version doesn't, or maybe even have more premium packaging. I just can't get on that bandwagon, but different strokes for different folks.

I'm actually about to purge my collection a bit, too. I've been catching up on my unwatched films, and those that I don't like are going to get sold. The only reason I double-dip is if maybe a steelbook or something like that comes out, but I'd get rid of the old version I had.

even though Vudu disc to digital has been out for a while, the new home beta version is making me think to sell at most maybe 2 movies.

i also buy BDs that i dont want to sell, but with Vudu home conversion, im gonna review the special features to see if theyre worth giving up. (director commentary, etc.)

95% of the time that's what I do, I usually don't pick up a BR title unless I've seen it either at the theater or rented it already. I blind buy once in a while, but I'm usually pretty sure I'm going to like it. I've made a few blind buys that I haven't thought were "great" movies, but were good enough to hang on to. I've also blind bought a few that sucked....which I've then sold off.

I sold most of my DVD collection earlier this year to fund upgrading my favorites from that collection to Blu-ray.

I am a lot more discriminating when it comes to buying Blu-rays, so there is no need for me to sell anything at present unless I find a vastly superior edition of a current title. I recently sold my standard edition Blu-ray of Casino Royale after I upgraded to the awesome Casino Royale Collector's Edition.

I've recently been doing some trimming of my collection (I've recently moved and space was a factor) and share your struggle with being overly sentimental about stuff and having it be a struggle to get rid of. My best advice to you is look over your collection and pull out any double dips, blind buys, or unopened movies.

Unless there are significant special features or packaging it's silly to keep multiple copies of the same movie when the money could go towards more movies or something more important. I think the only movie I have multiple copies of is Halloween II, and that is only because the Universal release has the Terror in the Aisles film included and as time goes by I question if it's even worth keeping for that. I've also kept some DVDs that I've since upgraded to blu-rays but certain special features weren't carried over.

I don't make many blind buys anymore as I was wasting too much money on films I didn't love just because they were a cheap and now if I find a movie that is dirt cheap that I am curious about seeing I'll rent it first. If you have any of these that you don't love or see yourself watching again get rid of them. They are just taking up space that could go to movies you love.

The reason I said to look for unopened movies is because there are many times I've really enjoyed a movie and bought it only for it to sit unopened and unwatched for years. Some movies just don't lend themselves well to multiple viewings, and that's one of the main reasons to own a movie. Fight the urge to be a completion-ist and just keep the movies that you really enjoy. At one time I had it in my head that I needed to get all of M. Night's movies...needless to say that passed and only three remain on my shelf.

Good luck!

Duplicates get sold off immediately. Other than that, I can't see unloading any of my collection of Blu-rays or DVDs until my movie room starts overflowing, making it hard or impossible to walk into. Note I have ~4,000 movies altogether, and it's just getting larger. I've been pretty good at judging what titles I would like, but there's a good chunk that were good the first time around but I don't see any chance of a repeat viewing. I could get rid of those, but I'd probably regret that move and buy them back so I just keep everything ( a pack rat trait passed down from generation to generation ).
