Default Lifetime's 'Flowers in the Attic' - Jan. 18, 2014

Based on V.C. Andrews’ controversial book that quickly became a cult classic, the Lifetime Original Movie "Flowers in the Attic" weaves the twisted story of the Dollanganger kids who, after the unexpected death of their father, are convinced by their mother Corrine (Heather Graham) to stay hidden in the attic of their wealthy grandparents’ mansion so she can reclaim the family fortune. But as her visits begin to wane after she becomes involved with a new husband (Dylan Bruce), the children endure unimaginable treatment at the hands of their ruthless grandmother Olivia Foxworth (Ellen Burstyn). As years go by and the eldest children Cathy (Kiernan Shipka) and Christopher (Mason Dye) come of age, both emotionally and physically, their family’s sordid past entraps them further as they look to each other for comfort.

Flowers in the Attic

~~

word is that its more faithful to the book than the 1987 movie .... ew.

even the trailer for the TV version is a tad shocking.

So it is a movie, based on the commercials I thought perhaps it was a series.

They need to make a miniseries out of Petals on the Wind. That would be some hilarious, disturbing camp comedy.

I liked the original movie and read most of the novels way back when...

I have to say it was pretty good. Though I wish they would have expanded it to a mini-series.

Hopefully they'll adapt more of the novels. As I thought they did a good job with this one.

I agree, thought it was good as well and I also thought it should have been a mini. There seemed to be several things brought up that wasn't explored like the shot of the grandmother combing her wigs hair was she dying? When she was scared of the dark did she have the same things done to her that she in turn did to her daughter and grand kids?

Also pretty good acting by the kids the oldest girl (Kiernan Shipka) she could have a pretty good career ahead of her and Ellen Burstyn wow! I would love to see her have a part in the next American Horror Story she played innocent crazy evil very well.

From what I recall of the novels... and what I just checked on V.C. Andrews's Wiki:

No. But she does have something of a tragic backstory involving her husband.

And no, I don't think they were trying to imply she was dying with the wig.

You can read more up on her backstory at the following link:

Lifetime's 'Flowers In The Attic' Locks In 6.1 Million Total Viewers

via press release:

FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC LOCKS IN 6.1 MILLION VIEWERS

World Premiere of Lifetime Original Movie Starring Heather Graham, Ellen Burstyn, Kiernan Shipka and Mason Dye

is Ad-Supported Cable’s Most-Watched Original Movie Since November 2012

LOS ANGELES, CA (January 21, 2014) – The Lifetime Original Movie Flowers in the Attic (#FlowersInTheAttic, #BadGrandma) locked in 6.1 million Total Viewers in its world premiere at 8:00pm Saturday night, according to Nielsen Research Fast Cable National ratings, making it ad-supported cable’s most-watched original movie in the demo since November 2012. Among Adults 25-54 (2.6 million viewers) and Women 25-54 (2.0 million viewers), Flowers in the Attic is cable’s number one original movie performance since the October 2012 premiere of Steel Magnolias. Based on V.C. Andrews’ controversial book, the movie also averaged 2.4 million Adults 18-49 viewers and 1.9 million Women 18-49 viewers, as well as a 4.5 Household rating.

Among social media, Flowers in the Attic was the night’s second most tweeted program on all of television, next to the Screen Actors Guild Awards, according to SocialGuide.

Lifetime will encore Flowers in the Attic this Saturday night at 10:00pm ET/PT, immediately following the world premiere of Lizzie Borden Took An Ax.

Starring Heather Graham (Drugstore Cowboy), Academy Award®, Golden Globe® and Emmy® Award-winner Ellen Burstyn (Political Animals), Kiernan Shipka (Mad Men), Mason Dye (Secret Diary of an American Cheerleader) and Dylan Bruce (Orphan Black), Flowers in the Attic weaves the twisted story of the Dollanganger kids who, after the unexpected death of their father, are convinced by their mother Corrine (Graham) to stay hidden in the attic of their wealthy grandparents’ mansion so she can reclaim the family fortune. But as her visits begin to wane after she becomes involved with a new husband (Bruce), the children endure unimaginable treatment at the hands of their ruthless grandmother Olivia Foxworth (Burstyn). As years go by and the eldest children Cathy (Shipka) and Christopher (Dye) come of age, both emotionally and physically, their family’s sordid past entraps them further as they look to each other for comfort.

Andrews’ first published novel, Flowers in the Attic, was an instant hit when it was released in 1979, topping bestsellers lists in just two weeks. Captivating millions of readers worldwide, the book launched a series of five novels about the Dollanganger and Foxworth families. Andrews’ novels are famous for their twisted, rags-to-riches family tales that explore why people love to hate and hurt each other. Today, there are 106 million copies of her books that have been published in 95 countries.

Lifetime is currently developing the sequel to Flowers in the Attic, Petals on the Wind.

Flowers in the Attic was produced by Front Street Pictures, Inc. for Lifetime Pictures. The movie was executive produced by Merideth Finn (The Rite) and Michele Weiss (Little Children) of Cue the Dog Productions, along with Charles W. Fries of Fries Film Company, Inc. Rob Sharenow, Tanya Lopez and Lisa Hamilton-Daly executive produced for Lifetime. Harvey Kahn (Romeo Killer: The Chris Porco Story) produced the film for Front Street Pictures. The teleplay was written by Kayla Alpert (Up All Night), and Deborah Chow (The High Cost of Living) directed.

USA So excited for "Petals On the Wind."

Kudos to Lifetime for not only believing so strongly in this film to green light the sequel; "Petals On the Wind" before last weekend's premiere but also for not shying away from the source material. The ratings are well deserved. That being said, with Lifetime's "Bonnie & Clyde" arriving on bluray next Tuesday (January 28th) just 7 weeks following its network debut. Is there any word as to the same treatment for "Flowers In the Attic" arriving approximately on Tuesday, February 25th? Keep an eye out people, thanks :-D

Bonnie & Clyde was a History Channel film that was just simulcast on Lifetime like they did with History's Hatfields & McCoys.

Right, I know that. But from what I hear, both "Bonnie & Clyde" and "Flowers In the Attic" are being distributed by the same company. If that is true then perhaps they are following a similar release schedule. Hope there is a quick turnaround from premiere date to bluray release.

Ah very cool, yeah for a long while I have desired to be in L.A. but have since debated on if I still want to be there or L.A. adjacent. West coast for sure no doubt about that.

And for anyone curious, seems we have our answer in regards to home release of Lifetime's "Flowers In the Attic." Lionsgate will release the film to disc on April 15th, however currently only listed as a DVD release. No word on bluray/digital combo edition. I am hoping the latter will be announced soon.

Can't wait for next year's sequel; "Petals On the Wind."

If it is distributed by Lionsgate, there is no chance it hits Blu-ray.

I thought it turned out pretty good, though the movie was purposely vague on when the movie was taking place. Only a few elements of the technology gave it away.

The two youngest children really had very little dialogue.

Why do you say that if Lionsgate is distributing that there's no chance of a bluray edition? They've released plenty of direct-to-video releases on both dvd format and bluray format. Not sure why there would be any difference when it comes to "Flowers In the Attic."
