Default Wonka (2023)

Quote:
Warner Bros. has acquired the film rights to Willy Wonka from the Roald Dahl Estate, with plans to reboot the franchise under the guidance of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them producer David Heyman.

Heyman will produce the new film. Michael Siegel, the manager of the Dahl Estate, will serve as executive producer alongside Kevin McCormick. Simon Rich, the writer of The Secret Lifes of pets, is taking the first pass at the script.

According to Variety, the film will be a prequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the 1964 Dahl book that was twice adapted to film, once with Gene Wilder as Wonka, and again in 2005 with Johnny Depp. The reboot film will not be a Willy Wonka origin story but will tell a standalone story set during the early years of Wonka’s career.

There’s been no indication either way about what other characters from Dahl’s novels may appear in the new movie, but it is clear that a successful first outing could lead to a whole franchise of Wonka movies.

Ugh...not again. The original is a classic, and Burton's attempt was unremarkable at best. The performances of Freddie Highmore and AnnaSophia Robb were credible, but everything else sucked.

I'll only not be angry if Tom Hiddleston plays Wonka.

Not only do I hate this because it will never top the original, I feel like this is a sort of cash grab by the studio to capitalize on the publicity the role received after Wilder's death. So f**k everyone involved in this.

Waiting for WB to announce that they're gonna fastrack a Wonka/Roald Dahl cinematic universe. Then they'll push out a half-assed, studio-meddled, divisive Wonka movie followed by a string of shitty Wonka team-up and crossover movies.

And I would only support it if they manage to pump out a decent adaptation of Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator.

Just as long as they refrain from using the godawful Candyman song.

As long as they don't cover the same ground as the original movie I don't have a problem with it.

WB sure is eager to take the "worst studio ever" title from Sony!

Is this gonna be the dark gritty Wonka origin story?

"William Wonka... a mild-mannered teenager... bites into a radioactive chocolate bar... now, Willy Wonka creates magical candy for children around the world by day, and by night, he and his army of Oompa Loompas fight against the evil forces of Captain Vegetable."

I agree. It's certainly unfortunate timing on the studio's behalf.
