Default The villain gets captured on purpose cliche.

How many movies have imitated this after the dark knight? The villain gets captured on purpose and then does some horrible counter attack and escapes and we say: whoa he wanted to be captured. Some examples include the expendables 3 and Skyfall. Are there any more examples? And please correct me if this has happened before the dark knight. I could be wrong. Nevertheless it is a recurrent movie event.

It did but I feel like it's become more popular these days. The Avengers and Star Trek 2 come to mind.

Yeah. I remember when watching the expendables 3 and Mel Gibson's character gets captured early on I was thinking: Oh let me guess, he got captured on purpose to deliver some lethal blow to the expendables.

-Loki in The Avengers
-Palpatine in SW: Revenge of the Sith
-Kahn in Star Trek: Into Darkness
I'm sure there are more but all these guys were captured willingly with ulterior motives.

Are there any examples of classic movies where this has happened?

It didn't work in Avengers and it's never worked since.

That trope was the basis for everything that happens from the mid-point on in Skyfall.

Believe it or not, but The Dark Knight did not do everything first.

One quick example that comes to mind is Se7en.

I know. But it was the first movie after which I noticed a pattern with the following movies. That's the reason I asked to be corrected if this had happened before.

Yeah, even when I first watched The Dark Knight I immediately thought of SE7EN. Many more examples as mentioned by other posters here. If there is a "pattern" then maybe it was started by Revenge of the Sith as it was the more mainstream film that did it before The Dark Knight. I'm not saying it is, but I don't see a "pattern" of trying to follow or imitate a particular film.

I think he meant Magneto. Although, Magneto was sprung by Mystique, so does that count as being captured by purpose? Unless I've completely forgotten a huge part of the plot.
