Reason I ask is I've got the French 2012 1st edition steelbook sealed and I want to watch it.... however im worried it will devalue it. If it actually has any value..
Or do you just get steely's of the ones you already own ![]() |

I open 95% of my steelbooks. The 5% are of duplicate movies which may or may not have different artwork. Sometimes I just buy duplicates to get 1 inch closer to being a scalper. But really, i'm just a guy who likes steelbooks. My Australian "2012" is sealed, because I watched the UK one.. just an example.
To have 1 copy of a movie and never watch it seems a bit silly. |

I open just about every steel I but and wouldn't buy a steel if I didn't plan on opening it unless there are multiple exclusive versions, like say TDKR or E.T., in which case I open the digibook and leave the steel sealed. I also haven't opened the empty Disney Viva Boxes but that is only because there isn't anything in them.

If you really like the movie (sounds like you do) then open it and watch it, why would you want to sell a film that you really really like...
Its up to you but its like saying i am not gonna open my Last samurai steelbook... its my favorite film and i need to watch it and enjoy it ![]() |

I open them all and watch/rewatch the films at some point, that's the sole purpose of why I buy Blu-rays, and therefore steelbooks
![]() If I love a film, then I might as well look for a steelbook edition of it, to own that film in a fashionable case rather than a random amaray. When you have the steelbook fever, it gets tempting to purchase the steelbook of a film you wouldn't even have considered for purchase had it been in a random amaray case — you couldn't pay me (well, no, actually you could) to buy steelbooks of Die Hard 5, Hansel & Gretel or GI Joe, despite the latter two having good-looking steelbooks coming up. But so far, I haven't bought films on Blu-ray that I dislike just because one of their edition could be rare, and all my blind buys have paid off. I'd never buy a Blu-ray without opening it, and I certainly would never buy two copies of a steelbook, I'm not into selling. And the steelbook of a crappy movie holds no value to my eyes ![]() I'm not really a collector looking for the rarest things, I'm more of a cinema fan caring about what my BR collection looks like. It's kind of like pornstars and exhibitioners (best metaphor I could come up with ![]() Last edited by Nom utilisateur; 06-28-2013 at 08:36 PM. |

I open and watch mine. Some are still unopened but I just haven't gotten around to watching that particular movie. In time they will all be opened.
Some may eventually get sold too (whether opened or not), but that's more because of double dipping or other factors than because I want to be some marketplace. Last edited by Taikero; 06-28-2013 at 09:00 PM. |

Yeah, I'm a bit worried about that. I have quite a few unopened titles with no idea whether or not they're all fine. So far no problems *knock on wood*, but it's concerning.

If you look at ebay there are not that many steelbooks which get sold at £50+. You may get the odd one or two.
The movie 2012 is not that sought after. As a steelbook it will hold its value at best. To get a profit out of it would be a neat trick. Just throwing figures out there guys, but I imagine less than 2% of steelbooks are ending up as investments. Most of those are blu fans exclusives. In 10 years time? Who knows? With 4k, possible encryption memory card technology.. The disc media well may be on its last legs, and so will the packaging that goes with it. One thing is for sure, we are in the golden era of movie ownership, its never been this good and it can only get worse from here. |
