On that same note... like I've said before: I wouldn't care if Pirates 2 and every other movie I've ever loved in my life came out on BD this year...if they put those out on discs that look like TFE, House of Flying Daggers, or Robocrap...then it's worthless. I won't buy that at any price.

This is almost good news in some respects: This almost virtually assures that when the time DOES come for Pirates 2, etc...we'll hopefully get those in the pristine HD that they deserve vs. what's being put out out now.

I just have to wonder when some of these studios are going to finally deem HD-DVD viable enough to throw them a few experimental bones.

Regardless of anything else: HD-DVD has proven itself.

It's just going to become increasingly senseless and bad business for certain studios to completely ignore it if present trends continue on much longer.

Personally, as long as I still get Jay and Silent Bob movies, I'm happy.

Although computer generated movies(i.e. Cars) do tend to come out very very nice. No excuse for film grain noise now...

Who cares, DL BR isn't out yet and on SL MPEG2 those would be yet another botched releases to upset BR supporters once again...

In the meantime Disney should just support HD DVD so those of us who wish to can get some of their movies in great HD quality can.

Sony's biggest film since Spiderman 1 & 2 was The DaVinci Code. I wonder if this will be a BD release? Standard DVD should be out in November.

There has been talk about the Superman films being released on Blu-ray. It will be particularly interesting to see how Superman Returns looks in this format, since it was shot digitally with the Panavision Genesis camera system and will not be a film-to-tape transfer.

I'm pretty sure that I read somewhere that it would be a day and date release with DVD, but don't quote me on that.

What makes you think that it is HD DVD that makes the discs look good?

Would HD DVD make The Fifth Element look good too?

The assumption is that the HD DVD version of any movie would be using the VC-1 codec rather than BD's favorite MPEG2. Using this theory every movie released on HD DVD should look better than its BD counterpart. This is why I and others keep stating that BD needs to use a better codec pronto, whether it be VC-1 or MPEG4... the point is MPEG2 isn't looking so good on BD.

I'm not blaming the format! I'm blaming piss poor film transfers, lack of remastering that was needed, and possibly a codec issue.

It can be a crappy HD-DVD same as a crappy BD if you don't cover those bases and those things are what have just happened to work against BD a lot more right now, largely thanks to Sony Studios' output.

Crap on HD-DVD: Full Metal Jacket, for one. Easily as bad as any of the crappy BD discs for the same reasons. Codecs and format in and of themselves don't mean squat.

Your theory is flawed.

MPEG2 is Sony's favourite codec, not Bluray's.

The BDA is not Sony. Disney is not Columbia Tristar.

WB is authoring BD with VC-1. There is no reason that Disney could not do the same.

The codec in and of itself isn't the problem. The key word is implementation.

Where MPEG 2 may have some issues is trying to cram it on BD25's if you want to get optimal results.

So you need to do one of two things: Bring out BD50's and/or change to a more efficient codec.

But none of that matters if you come out with crappy sources that are sorely in need of a face life and a remaster.

All the storage and sleek hotness codecs in the world are uselesss to you if your source material is lacking.

Garbage in, garbage out.

My apologies - I misinterpreted your intent.

I agree whole heartedly with this last post.

I see no reason for any of the BD studios to consider HD DVD as a solution for any of BD's issues and will challenge any assertions that it might

I am very sad that one of the few HD DVDs that interest me, Full Metal Jacket, is a 'wait for better' title. I wonder if the BD will be better - somehow I doubt it.

All current BDs are using MPEG2 are they not? And aren't there some BDs out from Lions Gate and Warner? Why aren't the non-Sony studios using a better codec already? Is it because there's been problems getting better codecs to work with BD? In any case, my theory is spot on as the situation stands now.

I'm sure we can count on being double dippped on those at some point, but in those cases, it'll be good news...although we can all argue that they should've done it right the first time.

I think this whole issue with Disney has nothing to do with the format. It's just that they don't want to release their "A" material to a small audience (both BR and HD DVD audiences are).
