Observations

I compiled the list awhile ago so I cannot really recall if it's because Fox/Sony/Universal have few movies that made between $60-$100m or that they have been very good at releasing titles from that band, but if it is the latter, the former two have been exceptional and so too have Universal, having joined the band late on.

Warner have more releases than anyone, so having just a couple to go is great work too. As expected, Disney, which hardly released anything, especially live action catalogue and Paramount, which was so poor they eventually leased out their library to Warner, bring out the rear.

Across studios though, it is a wonder that they hardly took advantage of tie-ins to release old catalogue when they could (Are We There Yet?, Jackass, Rush Hour 2, Dreamworks movies). Yeah, Alien, Bourne, Transformers etc all get re-released every sequel, but even without those movies they would sell. You'd expect them to chuck out Are We There Yet? because how else would it sell. Also there seems to be some weird reason why sequels remain unreleased (Jaws 2, Rush Hour 2, Bad Boys 2, Ring 2, Smokey and the Bandit II, the Nutty Professor II, Beverly Hills Cop 2, Dr. Dolittle 2, Charlie's Angels 2), once again, wouldn't they sell better being released with their predecessors? Most of these went downhill on the second installment too, making it more reason to release them together.

The list was based off data from Box Office Mojo which has only data up to 1980 plus select pre-1980 films that did very well (most of which has been released on Blu-Ray). However, it is still strange to see a number of films from the post-DVD era that remain unreleased for mystifying reasons.

I will not be going below $60m simply because the band between $50-$60m is huge and the fact is that there are still 133 films that you would assume would sell more (due to initial popularity/box office) having still not been released and give the slothlike pace of releases, this list won't be complete for at least another 4-5 years, if not longer. Of course, with the Sony leak as huge evidence, it is not necessary that the highest grossing films are the most popular years later, but as we have no other barometer, and my time and effort, this will do for now. Even the Warner Bros. 7 release announcement has only 1 film above $60m and yet they have 14 titles to go plus Paramount's huge backlog, so clearly other factors are taken into account too, but this is my contribution.

Somewhat on topic, but more of an FYI. This came out in September.
