United Kingdom Are We Ready For The 2014 Steelbook Onslaught!

After it was announced that Play.com were gonna cease trading and selling Steelbooks, and when HMV went bust I must admit I thought it was all over for steelbook collecting. Who would have thought last year we would see the titles we did and the release schedule that then came from Zavvi, Amazon and Entertainment Store. As we enter a new year I wonder what delights we'll see over the coming months. We already know of the approaching Pixar and Disney titles but what Steelbooks do you want to see and do you think we will see them?

Three major titles I really want: Jurassic Park Trilogy, Indiana Jones Saga and The Abyss.

Never going to pre-order a Zavvi exclusive again* - not after the stupid price drops they've just done.

*Unless it's part of the Marvel Universe!

If you look at the number of unsold steelbooks reduced in Zavvi's recent sales I think they may have overestimated the market. I think they are approaching the saturation point when steelbooks become so common that they no longer have enough cachet to justify the extra cost.

It's also the titles they are producing. Imo something like point break doesn't need a steelbook. Seeing as its been out a while on blu ray. Robocop is the same and seeing as a second one has just been announced it doesn't help.

Then there are some movies that are so bad they shouldn'. Be released at all and they are getting steelbook releases.

The marvel movies will always do well as people want the set. I've got avengers 3 Times. 2 steelbooks which I put the standard us and uk releases into and the suitcase release.

I definitely think im going to cease with the double dipping and panic buying, trying to buy that 'soon to be sought after' title.

I'm just gonna pick up new titles, for movies I enjoyed.!!!

Screw the Limited Edition, Limited run releases/ re-releases.
I've been cancelling most of my Zavvi pre-orders. I'm glad I cancelled Reservoir Dogs at £15 cause I got it for £6 over xmas.

2014. Bring me TRUE LIES.!!!

Bring them on! I wont buy them if they look horrible (Only God Forgives) and I wont buy them if I don't like the film enough (most releases).

I think Zavvi have realised where they went wrong last year with regard to the number of titles. They haven't announced too many for this year so far aside from Disney/Pixar titles which are obviously guaranteed sellers for them. Hopefully they have more unique titles with an 'Ultra Limited Print Run' to come

2013 was an interesting year for Steelbooks, probably the time when it gained a wider audience... nice to see more SB releases in the U.S.

Hopefully greater stuff is in the makes, will be kicking off the 2014 SB mania with RUSH.

I'm done with steelbooks after the rest of Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes out on blu-ray, and after Phase 3, if we are still on blu-ray by then.

Saying that, Entertainment Store is f*cking horrible.
After the sh*t with my copy of "Star Trek Into Darkness", decided that ES were not worth the hassle.

I'm a little late to the steelbook game so I certainly hope there is no saturation point - I'm just gettin' started . I think there's MUCH to look forward to, they just have to come up with better designs. The landscape steels are extra cool IMO so I hope to see more of those. I prefer minimalist designs like THE DEPARTED. However, I think most of the common Warner steels are some of the most boring ones on the market.

As for what titles I'd like to see made steelbooks of, can't really think of anything specific. I'd like to see steelbooks of the more obscure horror titles. Imaging a steelbook of CHOPPING MALL

I'm only nine steels away from 400

Anyway I expect more Studio Ghibli and Kubrick announcements soon, and would double dip on some really classy Hitchcock steels and also the Universal horror films

Other than that:

Evil Dead 3
John Rambo
X-Men 3
Alien
LOTR: The Two Towers
LOTR: The Return Of The King
Die Hard 3 (with similar design to the others - apparently strong rumours of this happening)
Die Hard 4

And just to complete the sets:
RED
G.I. Joe (The first one which Play was going to release)

I'm ready

I've gone through all the Disney films, cancelled some pre-orders, decided to collect classics over pixar and figured out which ones I want.

pre-order:
101 dalmatians
fantasia
dumbo
peter pan

the rest i will buy if and when available:
snow white
pinocchio
bambi
sleeping beauty
sword in the stone
black cauldron
lion king

I think Zav are currently right on a tipping point and should slow it down, change it up. this year I would prefer less frequent releases with limited runs like TWBB.
Also, this year I'll focus my bd purchases on eureka, arrow, new wave, third window and digibooks I've missed out on because of steelbooks.
sbs will be my last priority which will be easy because ive passed up so many zavvi steels of my favourite films where as before I would buy no matter what.
i actually have no specific titles in mind but look forward to what 2014 may bring.

I'll preorder the Disneys but other than that they can kiss my ass.

I'm offloading a ton of steels in 2014.. Not getting out of it but just offloading tons of stuff I won't ever see again.

They do need to slow down. The WB steelbook have too much info on them. They need to learn from Disney and marvel that it should be plain. The Rocketeer is possibly my favorite sb the year that I have bought, even over world war z

I think its fair to say we will all probably be a little more selective of what we "pre-order" - kinda annoying to think that something you bought not so long ago has price-dropped substantially - BUT then you also play the "risk" game...dont pre-order and you could miss out!

In saying that...zavvi are flooding the market a little and quite possibly with some titles that most dont really want (or already have) Steelies should be a selling point for movies - not a "re"marketing ploy.

Personally I have a few titles already pre-ordered for 2014: Gravity 3D, RUSH (awesome movie) Frozen 3D (havent seen it and I'm now starting to hear mixed reviews - so may drop it) and THOR 2 - 3D for starters. I always keep an eye open for whats being released just in case there is something I REALLY want. I'm hoping (personally at least)that we see a few more 3D releases this year - yes I may be in the minority, but 3D needs a push along as far as steelies go and is generally a no-brainer buy for me even if I havent seen the movie

In summary....If I REALLY like it i'll get it...and if I kinda like it....I'll probably get it too!

Chris

I'm going to be very selective this year for upcoming releases since last year I went crazy and bought so many only to end up getting rid of some. No double dips on same releases. Must pick only one artwork for the multiple releases. I think I will stick to the big superhero movies and a select few that I think is worth it. I will stop pre-ordering from Zavvi this time around because of the ridiculous price drops. I would like to see a Terminator 3 & X-Men 3 release to complete the collections! Really hoping for True Lies though!!!!
