Default Sony unveils 3D head-mounted display for surgeons in Japan

Still 720P OLEDs, but Love the center over-the-head stabilizer bar making this a consumer comfort friendly alternative!
Hoping this model gets a U.S. consumer release. Sleek looking square shaped side speakers also add a look of quality to this discrete-3D capable head-mounted display.

I really hope American hospitals start using these!

The Oculus Rift. Maybe the future of gaming.

The Oculus Rift has a sweet "4D" theater experience. It creates a virtual theater that you can move around in, choose a seat, and even see the projector light stream. Whatever movie you choose to play shows up on the theater screen. It creates a great sense of immersion because you can look around the theater while you are watching a film.

Yeah, only for a short clip. A buddy of mine received his oculus dev kit last month and I tried it a couple weeks ago. It is pretty sweet, not really necessary though. However, it's definitely better to wait until their 1080p version comes out next year. The resolution is currently too low to enjoy and refresh rate doesn't seem to fast. Granted it tracks your head movement perfectly, it just has a little lag for the image to clear up. The best part is that it will be 1/2 the price of anything Sony releases with the added benefit of head tracking. Last year they said the consumer version would be released this year, now it is next, so who knows. I will say, there is nothing like experiencing having the image take up your entire field of view.

Would purchase this new Sony model just for the comfort benefit in a heart beat, but I've also been looking at the Oculus Rift technology for some time, hoping the 1080P displays will be able to compete or possibly surpass the 720P OLED quality of the Sony HMZ-T1.

As an avid BD and BD 3D movie enthusiast, tracking for gaming has not been a priority for me.

With the OLEDs refresh rate ability it also has not been a problem. Since November 2011 the unit has given me highest satisfaction for high-end picture quality. Also, full 1080P encoded Blu-ray's & BD 3Ds have no visible artifact rendering on the 720P displays.

Was very disappointed with the 1080P displays of Silicon Micro Display's ST1080 HMD when it was released and which I returned for a full refund.

Occulus guys don't talk about 3D movies much and they seem to be more about gaming. Are you saying that they will incorporate 3D movie viewing as well? If so I will be 1st in line to get this

It's about gaming but why wouldn't they allow you to plug in a Blu-Ray player or console and watch 2D or 3D movies? It would be a feature that would cost nothing extra to incorporate and be the second major marketing reason for people to by one.

They have software for playing back side by side videos on the oculus, yes. I have read in the oculus forums that video playback of 3D blu rays should be incorporated with the retail version. It is all open source, so anyone can develop software for it. I know it can playback 2D blu rays through the software, with or without the theater experience turned on.

Man..this does look great as well. Never bought the previous versions that Sony released (came REAL close though). If I see that this version will be getting a U.S. consumer release...I'm going to get it ASAP!!

Just as a side note/update to the Rift:
