For consideration:

Rambo: First Blood Part II
Godfather II
The Dark Knight
The Empire Strikes Back (my pick)

I could keep going, but I'll stop with TESB because its the best sequel evar.

Aliens, Godfather II, Empire Strikes Back.

Recent memory: Spider-man 2.

Dark Knight is a played-out response, but, I suppose, it should be on the list.

The Dark Knight
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Superman II
The Empire Strikes Back
The Two Towers; if you want to call it a sequel when it's really just a continuation of a much longer film.
The Return of the Pink Panther

Cool

This is a no-brainer. By far, the greatest sequel of all time is:

Terminator 2

Default Very Hard.

The Godfather Part II (1974), followed by The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982), and Dawn of the Dead (1978)

Aliens, while Alien was a great movie, Aliens didn't drive it into the ground and took the series in a different direction. It gave more depth to the character of the aliens, explaining more about them and giving the viewers great action at the same time. It took some potshots at big business, and greed. There was cameraderie and honor written into it. The part where Velasquez and the Lieutenant blow themselves up to save the others was also a great part, teaching that it is sometimes better to sacrifice yourself to save others.

It was a lot more complex then just another hour and a half popcorn thriller.

Perhaps techincally, but in any other way "The Silence of the Lambs" is NOT a sequel (was not made as one nor was it ever intended as a follow-up to "Manhunter").

If you can call each episode of Star Wars a movie than my vote is for:

Band of Brothers episodes (or parts) 2-10. Just gets better after each episode.

Wrath of khan
Empire strikes back
Aliens
The dark knight

In no particular order, but I voted for Wrath of Khan

I chose the Empire Strikes Back on the poll. The Dark Knight is a real close second. I think I just chose ESB cause it is a classic that has held up very well over time. We will see how TDK fares in the future, but right now it is in my top 2.

This is easy, Empire Strikes Back. To some it is even considered to the best out of all the Star Wars movies. You have the stunning revelation from vader that he is lukes father, yoda, father vs. son duel, etc.
