Any way they can be directed to an FAQ page? Black bars and such.

You stick the 5 most common questions right in their face in bold type, and well, in a board I run they acknowlege they will be banned for asking them. A seperate page after the FAQ

"I acknowlege I have read and understand the entire FAQ document, and that I can be banned for asking those questions/making those comments"

It's very effective actually

we can't ban people for asking questions...no matter how many times we read the same question.
I would have been banned my first day....

I think corner-carvers (a racing forum I belong to) has the right approach, take a look at their guide for new members.

A few of my favorites:
Quote:
Use the search function BEFORE you post a question.

If you have performed multiple searches, and you still have not found the answer to your question, search again. While the possibility does exist that you, the freshest of all meat, have a tech question that has never been covered here before, it is becoming an increasingly more unlikely event with each passing day.

Anyone schooled in economics is familiar with Gresham's Law: bad money drives out good. Well, indifferent moderating invites a Gresham's Law of Online Interaction: idiotic postings drive away contributors who have something interesting to say.

Anyone ever call you the "Moderator Nazi"?

That tactic is pretty lame actually and a very quick way to have the traffic you want turn around and leave.

At least I would anyway.

The best forums are where the moderators aren't power trip freaks.

Traffic is only valuable if it carries some sort of contribution to the forum. What good would it be if this was the biggest blu-ray forum on the net, but contained nothing but "Where is Star Wars?" and "Why are there black bars?" posts?

We had a similar problem with a forum I was admin for. Here's how we addressed it:

1.) Require registration to post anything. (No anonymous posts.)
2.) When a new user clicks on "Register" they are taken to a Top 10 Questions FAQ-like page that has a META redirect timer on it that will not direct them to the actual registration page for 3 full minutes (or more, if you want). They'll have to do something--most people will read the page.
3.) Our occurrences of "newbie posts" dropped considerably after that.

Default I don't get it....

I am by no means a fully informed consumer of Blu-Ray. At the same time, I am aware of at least the basics about Blu-Ray. I am a new member to this site, but have been following it for a while.
I don't see the big deal with individuals asking basic or "dumb" questions. I enjoy coming to these sites and getting updated, but then when people act like snotty know-it alls who are annoyed by use "un-informed" consumers, it really takes the enjoyment out of being part of this forum. Some people don't spend much time as others with this stuff, so know less. If you don't like these dumb questions, well then don't answer/read them. Some of the attitudes on this forum are terrible. Lets support fellow blu-ray supports, no matter how much knowledge one does or does not have. Because right now, the more blu-ray supporters the better. Just my thoughts.
So go ahead and start with the name calling and criticism. It's expected and I am ready....

Can't you use the search feature? That's what this is all about.

If I don't know an answer I do that first. If I see something which I may want to post I use that first. Otherwise we end up with the same threads over and over again which is what's happening with all the '300' threads...oops I mean "offical' 300 threads.

its not that its just like in 6 days we had 20+ is star wars coming after about the 10th time being nice and responding it gets old thats all ... really all you have to do is go search : star wars (for example) I really dont mind, but like with the big topics such as star wars, spidey 3, what is a blu-ray lol, that kinda stuff it gets bothersome to regular memebers to have to answer over and over some are better at just responding in a nice way than others lol

The coolest thing here is as soon as you post in lets say an old spidey 3 thread it goes right back to the top for everyone to click and start posting again I just think everyone should keep that in mind
