One thing that I'm finding crazy and pretty pathetic is the mass of people who now worship reality tv stars as major celebrities. Hundreds of people will spend hours waiting in line, travel hundreds of miles all for the hope of getting to meet the person who they see on tv.
For example, several weeks ago, it was announced that Uncle Si from Duck Dynasty would be appearing at a hunting expo in Conway AR last weekend. I'll admit that I briefly had the thought that it would be cool to shake his hand and maybe get a photo, but apparently I had underestimated the popularity of these guys. Over 20,000 people showed up. Some drove from 3 hours away hoping to meet Uncle Si. The only people who got to meet him were ones who showed up at 4:30 am and waited in line for several hours! Many people were upset that they didn't get to meet Uncle Si like the expo promoted. I just really don't understand the mentality. Waiting in line for hours just to meet someone for like 5 seconds. I can sorta understand doing this for a big time celebrity like Tom Cruise because there is the curiosity factor of seeing how this person acts in real life, but reality tv people are still just people. Why does seeing them on tv magically transform them into something different? The thing I find a bit disgusting is these stars have served up a new business model because of their huge fan base. Take Pawn Stars Countless clueless fans will stand in line to go into a freaking Las Vegas Pawn Shop thinking Rick and Chumlee will be there at the counter to chat with. Not a chance. But the store will happily sell you some Pawn Stars swag crap. Same thing with American Pickers store. If you think it will be neat to travel to Iowa and meet the stars, you won't. Instead, you'll stand in line and find a shop that is mostly gift shop crap with the picked items being not for sell or too expensive. Same experience at Duck Commander. It's crazy that people are standing in line to go into a pawn shop or a crappy antique junk store. Apparently these shows are doing a good job convincing people that they are real. |
