![]() ![]() Fox is releasing a catalog television series BD?! Were I drinking coffee, I'd have spat it out all over my screen in disbelief. Clearly, this needs to be bought, and on release day. |

I myself want the OBAR (= Original Broadcast Aspect Ratio) (1.33:1). But I understand some people just want their HD screen filled. |

it is beyond sad that fans of 1.33 exhibited shows STILL have to worry about what will "happen" when they come to blu-ray as regards the aspect ratio. Sadly this news has the feel of 16:9 all over it, and I will be absolutely stunned if Fox actually chose to respect accuracy of presentation over the pressure of a 16:9 world.
The saddest thing of all is that it's the true fans that are letdown the most; the now older adults that watched the show during their childhood. All they want is to have the show updated to hd without having to suffer the unavoidable cropping that will undoubtedly occur, not to mention trying to somehow adjust to viewing the show in a foreign aspect ratio. sure, it's not confirmed 100% that the bds will be 16:9, but the restoration clip seems pretty definitive that they will be. We'll see in September I guess, but I'm not holding my breath for the original AR. ![]() |

Regarding the earlier question of the source of this info. I can tell you that I read it myself on Bill Mumy's Facebook page. Saw it with my own eyes. I had to really look for it because it's not shown as a big announcement. It was a comment inside a larger discussion. I'm not going to search for it again but, I recall it was posted around the 17th of January (give or take a day). I will also add that Kevin Burns (Lost in Space bigwig and president of Synthesis Entertainment which negotiates on behalf of the old Irwin Allen properties) has suggested that Bill Mumy jumped-the-gun...possibly meaning he was either wrong or revealed something too early (who knows). So this is very encouraging indeeed. But, at this stage, it's very unofficial. |

I wouldn't worry too much about the existence of a 16:9 version. The man responsible for the remaster explains in the YouTube comments that it's standard to do both versions for any show because it is impossible to sell the 4x3 format to a TV station these days. Though clearly he's proud of his work on the 16x9 version and thinks it is an improvement (HAHAHA!), he acknowledges that which version is used for home video is entirely up to Fox.
So far, have we had many classic shows released in only 16:9? I can only think of The World at War and Friends. Batman, Twilight Zone, I Love Lucy, The Honeymooners, Twin Peaks, Little House on the Prairie, The Andy Griffith Show, Star Trek/TNG, The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Avengers, Shogun, even Battlestar Galactica, all escaped the cleaver and I expect Lost in Space to as well. News of a Lost In Space BD release a bit premature perhaps?
Edit: In my book, nothing is confirmed of a BD release of Lost In Space. From the Lost In Space Remastered Petition Facebook page: "Well folks unfortunately Bill Mumys statement was a bit premature. The September release date has not been confirmed by Fox. In fact they have not even given a decision yet that they want to proceed forward for sure. Sorry but I guess we will just have to wait for more news" https://www.facebook.com/pages/Lost-...71284629598748 Edit: Also from Lost In Space Remastered Petition Facebook page: "Our moderator Lex Kennedy was hesitant about making this an official announcement release but I got a little overly excited. Since he has more contacts then anyone he will handle forthcoming announcements." Last edited by solovoyager; 01-26-2015 at 01:35 AM. |

This is a crazy announcement considering it's coming from Fox who recently stopped putting out several new shows on blu. This is a most welcome surprise, just reminds me that I need to catch up and get the Batman and Twilight Zone collections that I've been meaning too.

Those in charge of the Fox home video division must inhabit some sort of alternate universe where it makes sense to be wary of releasing The X Files or 24 on Bluray but ok to release Lost In Space .
As much as I would love to finally get the missing seconds of Return From Outer Space restored on home video releasing LIS before the other 2 shows makes no commercial sense at all |

The commercial argument for releasing LOST IN SPACE is this (my opinion, take it or leave it):
LOST IN SPACE appeals mostly to older fans like me...56 years old, some time on our hands and some money to spend. We like discs and don't care much for streaming, downloading, whatever. We like our big TVs. Post 1990 shows appeal to a younger demographic. These people are comfortable streaming and watching TV on portable devices. They are buying houses and paying off student loans. They are less likely to drop $200.00 on a box of discs. Do I know that for a fact? Nope. I'm guessing. But I think the logic is reasonable. BTW, picked up this nice View-Master set from Ebay about two weeks ago: [Show spoiler]

It has to be said that the potential market for Lost In Space is a tiny fraction of the market for the other 2 shows. I used to collect Viewmasters and had a lot including the ones for all 4 of the Irwin Allen shows which used to be worth a small fortune . Unfortunately I gave up collecting them and sold them off one Xmas about 5 years ago but was very pleased to net over £1000 for them so that eased the pain. The Viewmasters with a built in light were so much better than standard viewers and improved the clarity of the images no end and the Talking Viewmaster was great but the number of titles that talked was small compared to regular discs |
