Summit Entertainment landed a hit last year with the action-comedy Red. The Bruce Willis film was the highest-grossing picture for the studio outside of the Twilight franchise and has currently raked in $164 million worldwide. Also, while you and I know that the Golden Globes are meaningless, the nomination for “Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical)” helped raise the movie’s profile. With all that in mind, sources have told us that Summit has hired screenwriters Jon and Erich Hoeber to write a sequel. It’s worth noting that commissioning a script is not the same thing as a giving a green light. However, it is an important first step and if Summit is happy with the Hoebers’ screenplay, then I would expect the studio to hit the gas on what they’re probably hoping will be a new franchise.

Jon and Erich Hoeber clearly have a good relationship with Summit as they not only wrote Red, but also the upcoming Sam Worthington thriller Man on a Ledge for the studio. They’re also credited with handling the script for Peter Berg’s upcoming summer blockbuster Battleship. If you can find a way to have a character say “You sunk my battleship!” and not make it sound idiotic, you are a master of your craft.

As for a potential sequel to Red, there’s definitely room to expand the world. But it’s crucial that the Hoebers not only deliver a quality script, but that Summit gets the original cast back. Their chemistry and comic timing carried the film and I think audiences definitely want to see more of Helen Mirren wielding heavy artillery.

Very good news. I enjoyed the first, I'd be ok with a sequel as long as the whole cast returns,
[Show spoiler]minus Morgan Freeman of course considering he died
, because they all had great chemistry. Hope it all works out

Kinda surprised to hear about a possible sequel. I did like the movie and would watch it though. There were some pretty funny scenes and they're right, Helen Mirren "wielding heavy artillery" was pretty cool and I'd like to see more.

I'm not terribly surprised. The movie made quite a bit of money and audiences seemed to really get into it. So I kinda figured it was just a matter of time before we heard something about one. I just hope if it happens, it turns out well and isn't just a rehash of the first

It got good reviews cause others hold a different opinion than you and it is that simple.

I would not call a movie that as Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren in it as crap.

You did not enjoy it, did not like it, wasn't to your taste but it's not crap. Big difference.

Maybe you should try watching it first before holding an opinion.

And just because a film has a few big name actors in it doesn't mean it's gonna be great..

I can see that the nuance of what I was trying to say is lost on you and I never said it would be great but it sure does not mean because it's not great that it's crap either, there is a huge difference in between the two but never mind, sorry for disturbing you.

I hope that if they do a sequel, they don't go the DTV route with different actors. The cast is critical to something like this, and I hate sub-par DTV crap.

The guy usually has at least one blockbuster movie to his credit every year and he’s having a pretty nice day since his new film Transformers: Dark of the Moon is cleaning up at the box office. Speaking to MTV, Bonaventura spoke about the sequels to Red and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Speaking about Red 2, di Bonaventura says they have a script in place and now the trick is measuring how much of the original cast to bring back and how many new characters to introduce. Says Bonaventura,

Quote:
“I think the audience would be disappointed if we didn’t bring back the crew, but we’ve got to freshen the crew. We’ll bring in one or two characters that’ll play a really big part — maybe three, but definitely one or two. You know, Marvin and Frank and Sarah, you want to spend more time with those guys. Sometimes there’s a tendency to want to do too much of a good thing so you don’t really service anything, so we’re really trying to stay focused on our core crew with one or two new additions.”
Interesting. Can't wait to see how this turns out.

Surprised about the sequel talk. I thought the film was just so-so. Liked Malkovich the most. But overall a pretty forgetable experience, at least for me.

I agree with the concensus. Thought the movie was so/so. Def. worth a rent for some alright entertainment....but not worth a purchase IMO.

I'll wait to rent this one as well

I liked it. It wasnt blow your socks off good, but it was a decent flick none the less. Will be keeping an eye on this and check out the sequel. Really liked how the entire cast meshed together so hopefully everyone comes back with a new person or two.

I'm with you, Benny. I liked the first and would really enjoy a second. It was just a good popcorn flick. Nothing more, nothing less.

This is good news! I loved the first one. If my kid isn't listening I say, don't make me get the pig. We both laugh.
