Default Sub Time!

After living in several apartments with neighbors, I'm moving to one where I'll share no walls, floors or ceilings with anybody! So the time has come that I can finally pick up a subwoofer for my set up. Now the space isn't going to be all that huge; a living room, small dining room and kitchen that are all open. (I can provide actual dimensions if necessary.) I've done some reading and the general consensus is that two subs is always better than one. Now I can go the route and get two smaller, less expensive models that may work well in the apartment, but may not be enough for the future. I plan on, at some point, making the jump to a house and I don't necessarily want to have to reinvest in different subs because the ones I have aren't enough.

So I guess my options are:
-Pick up a pair of smaller and cheaper subs that may work well in my current situation, but come up short in the future.

-Spend a bit more on a higher-end single sub with the intention of picking up a partner for it a little later on when my bank account recovers.

I've just started this process, so I've been browsing the forums and the HSU, SVS & Rythmik sites trying to become familiar with the different offerings. I can say that the HSU VTF-15h is probably the limit on what I'm willing to spend to give some idea of a budget (not to mention the fact that it's probably overkill for my apartment).

I suppose the bottom line here is that I'm trying to future proof myself a bit and avoid buyers remorse in the future. Anyone have any thoughts or input that may have been in a similar situation? I can provide more info if needed.

Finally time for some rumble in your HT eh

Dual subwoofers are definately ideal especially in an open setting like you are referring to. However, if you already have a thought process of going with a second, down the road of the more expensive single sub...go with the single. At least that's my opinion. My room is sort of challenging as well. Two subs in differnt areas give you a better overall displacement of sound. But that being said, I'd still do the latter option you gave.
[Show spoiler]and don't overlook the SVS line

Everything you mentioned brings 1 or 2 sets of subs to mind, except these would not be short of taking to your new house.

Even if you decide on another sub or set, I doubt if they come up short, which can always be used for a second small system.(like a bedroom)

Dual SB-1000 $949.00

Dual PB-1000 $949.00

Both with free shipping. Me personally, I would want the dual PB-1000, because they can go lower in with the Hz.

Not sure what you're saying here. Are you saying they would or would not serve in a bigger space down the road?

I am liking that PB-1000 package. I'll have to get everything else set up and see how well they'd fit in space-wise. I do know that those VTFs would not fit.

You could consider looking for two smaller subs that would be good for a separete two channel system for music when you moved into a house. I know that I would not want to move my vtf-15h's anywhere. You should also look at PSA.

+1. In the end your gonna want quality over quantity. I bought a nice sub and then added a cheaper sub to it a few years after. Nice to have dual but if I had to choose I would go with a nicer single sub every time.

You mentioned (maybe) a size limit for the sub? How big is too big? Or maybe too heavy?

I noticed you like the dual pb1000's
I think what HAMP was saying, is that this package would most definately work in a larger room. And personally, i agree
[Show spoiler]Let's go track down HAMP and find out

Dimensions are definitely necessary in order to be sure what you're buying has the capability to fill your room.

Not always. They have to be the right type/style, and you'll need sufficient placement options to ensure you get the benefit they can provide, otherwise you won't derive much. It's not as though you can just drop them anywhere and all your room nulls simply disappear.

Another thing that would be beneficial is what size sub you're comfortable with. Subwoofers come in all shapes and sizes, and most people have size restriction due to one reason or another.

There's a living room, kitchen and small dining area that are all open to each other for a ballpark of 3600 cubic feet.

After quite a bit of combing through threads and reviews, I'm feeling partial to the HSU VTF-3 Mk 4 and Rythmik F12SE. Aesthetics is a bit of a factor for me which is why those come out a bit above the SVS. Would either of those work well with my space?

The VTF-3 would probably do well, but the F12SE not so much. From the Rythmik family I'd be looking at the LV12R instead. The PSA XV15 is another one worth considering.

I have a co-worker who also has the Monitor 9 speakers and the VTF-3 works very well with it.

Default hsu vtf-15h

if there's one sub you'd want to check out it would have to be the hsu vtf-15h! total beast! This sub plays everything from movies to games to music very well and when set to max spl mode it could easily fill your space so you can get that deep low frequency impact just like a movie theater. This could easily handle that space and then some!. Check my gallery for pics.

HSU Mk4 is the little brother of the (VTF-15) it can go just as low but it just can't fill as much space and hit as hard! still a very good sub might be best to wait till now and the end of fall as they are going to have specials for sure! I read a shootout review of all the top sub woofer makers like SVS "PB13 Ultra", Revel, Outlaw, Elemental Designs, Epik "Dual 15" sub!" all performed very well but it was the HSU vtf-15 that hit the hardest with the Epik Dual 15" that filled the room the most and the Epic also being the smallest out of all them.

I'll take some more pictures once I get everything in the room set up and situated how I want it.
