Default Leaving Neverland (2019) - Michael Jackson Sexual Abuse Doc

Quote:
Leaving Neverland is a two-part documentary exploring the separate but parallel experiences of two young boys, James Safechuck, at age ten, and Wade Robson, at age seven, both of whom were befriended by Michael Jackson. Through gut-wrenching interviews with Safechuck, now 40, and Robson, now 36, as well as their mothers, wives and siblings, the film crafts a portrait of sustained abuse, exploring the complicated feelings that led both men to confront their experiences after both had a young son of his own. Directed by Dan Reed. Leaving Neverland premieres March 3 on HBO.

Well this won't be controversial.

This actually reminds me when I was young and how jarring it was going from making pedophile jokes about him to mourning him now that he was dead. Like it seems like every completely forgot about the stuff he was in court for or that baby incident the moment he croaked.

The facts are there, the two men in question have defended Michael Jackson in court but have now changed their stories.

Very generous pinch of salt required with this one sided documentary.

Right? I was young when he died and up until his death, it was nothing but making jokes about him, as you said. I especially remember the pedophile jokes after the Mr. Jefferson episode of South Park aired.

As a huge admirer of his work (without going full Jackson Defence Force) and someone who appreciates the need to listen to survivors of abuse, this'll be a tough watch.

I agree. It is easy to call his defenders obsessed fans but we can only go with the facts here. He was never charged with anything. It is easy to portray anyone, anyway in a documentary after the accused's death.

I am open to the "other side" of the story but MJ is no longer around to defend himself so it all seems a little easy and ugly. As you say these two defended him previously so it also seems a little convenient as well now after his death.

In any case, innocent or guilty, his music and talent will stand the test of time.

I'm always intrigued by these sort of documentaries. I'll definitely give it a watch. Whether it holds any truth or not, we shall see.

Is this really a "movie" thread or a "TV show" thread given it isn't releasing generally in theatres and showing on cable etc.

The truth is, people have always tried to profit off the rich and famous and even false accusations resulted in payoffs until MJ did decide to go through the whole court trial and ye wasn't charged with anything and the people as mentioned under oath said he never did anything.

Two sides to a story and you're hearing one. Also fron perjurors.

Making jokes of MJ as a paedophile was cheap and easy for media and others yet the man was never convicted despite legal cases. The idea people don't lie under oath has to be funny. Somebody go watch that George Carlin bit on YouTube about court oaths lol.

I think to air this "documentary" now is a joke but such is the fervent nature of mindless audiences to simply be enraged by what they see and "feel" on these things without doing actual research to find how many false and inaccurate claims were made. Easier to be watching as a couch potato and scream "FACTS" about the fale and errouneous claims made.

There is a $100 million dollar lawsuit by the Jackson estate against HBO saying it violates the contract from a old Jackson music special HBO aired which had a non disparagement agreement.

Leaving Neverland is a documentary film that is airing on HBO. It premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. This is not the first time a film has not had a theatrical release. By that logic, nearly every Netflix original film would be considered a "TV show."

Well, typically Netflix movies do play theatrically for one week in at least NY and LA, those possibly just to qualify for awards (I’ve seen Roma, Buster Scruggs, and The Other Side of the Wind at NYFF, and then Barry, Velvet Buzzsaw, and Mowgli during regular theatrical release). Though there are exceptions, obviously Roma and Buster Scruggs hit theaters before Netflix and indeed are still in theatrical release, and with High Flying Bird the director actually told Netflix not to play it in theaters even though they wanted to.

Like many others, I remember the jokes about Michael Jackson growing up, but at that age you never really pay attention to these cases, and I am pretty clueless to the facts and arguments on both sides. So I have no opinion either way about the journalistic integrity of this documentary, which is obviously going to generate heated responses from different groups.

My biggest problem with this documentary is the fact that the ppl accusing him testified on his behalf at trial. They have 0 credibility and should not have been allowed to make this. In a way I hope the Jackson family smokes them in court. Do I think its weird he spent his time around kids yes, but he was found not guilty. This isnt a case like OJ where it was damning.

Sure, but my point still stands. This is a film.

The people behind this doc are idiots. The maids / cleaners accounts are far more credible. I do believe MJ is a pedo.

We'll never know with certainty what took place on his ranch back then.

One thing is for sure though; the parents that allowed their children to get this close and intimate with this man (we know for a fact that they shared bed at his ranch), simply because he was a celebrity, should have their heads examined.

Whether any abuse took place or not, those parents failed their responsibilities as parents.
