Wes Anderson Halfway Done With His Next Screenplay; Will Be Set In Europe
Wes Anderson's latest picture, "Moonrise Kingdom," is being described by some as a "charming evocation of childhood," a "tender triumph of design, decor and rich emotion" by us (read our review here), and a return to live-action form by some after a few years of what many have called uneven missteps. So what's the Houston, Texas-born director going to do for an encore?
Well, the 43-year-old auteur has been living in Paris for the last few years and now splits his time between the The City of Light and New York, so it's probably only fitting that some kind of Euro-influence has seeped into his work. And evidently that flavor is probably going to be at the center of his next film.
While real details are scant, according to an interview in Harper's BAZAAR, Anderson is halfway through another script but the writer/director won't reveal anything outside of its setting and milieu. "It's a film I want to make in Europe, a Euro movie," he said. Anderson also joked about the time he told American journos he wanted to make a film on location, in space, but he reiterates that comment was just a gag. "I was just kidding. I don't particularly like to fly, so I don't think I intend to work in space."
So there's probably no point in speculating about what Anderson's next film is going to be like, but clearly he enjoys his home abroad. "Anytime you walk down a street in Paris you haven't gone down before, it's like going to a movie or something," he said. "It's just entertainment to see the place."
Our only guess would be that Bill Murray will appear once again. His affection for the director was on display today at Cannes during the press conference for "Moonrise Kingdom." "I'm just so happy with how Wes just gets better," he said.
BREAKING: Wes Anderson Approaching Depp, Wilson, Murray, Law, Norton And More For Untitled New Picture
Wes Anderson is no dummy. And so, fresh off the success of Moonrise Kingdom, the quirky auteur is already hard at work setting up his next picture. True to typical Anderson form, Twitch has learned that it will be an ensemble cast and while the as-yet-untitled film - or, at least, title-as-yet-unknown-to-us film - will feature a number of Anderson's regulars there are also some intriguing new names in the mix.
While it's hard to say what stage of the process each of these is at at the present, we are told that Anderson is approaching a cast of Johnny Depp, Owen Wilson, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Jude Law, Jeff Goldblum, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe and Angela Lansbury to star in the film.
Please, please, please let this be an Anderson-ized version of Murder, She Wrote. Because that would be kind of amazing.
Actual details on story - as opposed to silly speculation - and updates on the casting process as we get them.
