Member of an ancient witch clan and possessing powers beyond the comprehension of mere mortals, Bayonetta faces-off against countless angelic enemies, many reaching epic proportions, in a game of 100% pure, unadulterated all-out action. Outlandish finishing moves are performed with balletic grace as Bayonetta flows from one fight to another. With magnificent over-the-top action taking place in stages that are a veritable theme park of exciting attractions, Bayonetta pushes the limits of the action genre, bringing to life its fast-paced, dynamic climax combat.

FEATURES

• Set to revolutionalise the genre, Bayonetta will be more than capable of pacing frenetic combos never shy of leaving nothing but gore. Utilising both hands and feet, for either long or close range attacks.
• You'll be able to summon powerful torture devices if you fill up a power meter shown on screen, without being injured. Such as an iron maiden or a guillotine.
• You can quick-change to a different weapon set mid-fight without having to jump out of the action. Kamiya has named the four hand/footguns as Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme, all together known as Scarborough Fair.
• Bayonetta is also capable of swapping her sleeves for wings to hover for mid-air combos. Bayonetta will also have the ability to use 'Witch Time' in which Bayonetta is able to execute several attacks more than in real-time.
• The AI will become attuned to any obvious patterns in your attacks and your score bonuses will decrease every time.
• During the game, there'll be holographic-looking civilians walking around, these are characters that exist in an alternate dimension who can't see you (Bayonetta), but can see the destruction you cause.

From Croft to Cammy, I’ll take a female protagonist over some cheesy line-spewing pretty boy any day of the week.

So Bayonetta, the upcoming third-person actioner from Platinum Games (compiled of key members from Okami’s Clover Studio), is high on my list of games to play.

While I’m inclined to focus on the the eponymous, gun-footed heroine, the game’s real draw is its pedigree; aside from the Clover connection, the game’s director, Hideki Kamiya, had a hand in creating the Devil May Cry franchise.

One look at Bayonetta’s dripping-with-goth environments, super-stylized combat, and crazy-ass creatures, and Kamiya’s influence will hit you like an oversized demon sword. In fact, it wouldn’t be out of line to sum up Bayonetta as “Devil May Cry with a woman”, as it absolutely oozes with similarities in all the best ways.

Most prominent of these, are the game's effective use of fast-paced, over-the-top action and oversized boss baddies.

When checking out the game at a recent Sega event in New York, my demo opened with a playable prologue set 500 years before the game’s story (Bayonetta is an older-than-dirt witch), that saw Bayonetta battling atop a rapidly falling clock tower.

As the Big Ben-looking structure raced toward its brick-breaking fate, Bayonetta stylishly dispensed some of the game’s antagonist angles—that actually look like clean cut demons—with the dual pistols in her hands and attached to her high heels.

Another battle saw a screen-filling foe erupt from the ground, fists first, right before picking up the stone cobbled bridge Bayonetta was standing on and rattling it like a stick. Both scenarios hinted at a focus on highly produced and polished set-piece battles.

When our angel-slayer isn’t strutting through epic encounters, she’s fighting determined hordes of low level beasties, with style to spare.

In addition to her four-gun arsenal, she packs the expected high-kicking acrobatics of a game with Devil May Cry pedigree as well as some special attacks. Most impressive are her torture moves—acquired by collecting orbs during regular battle—that allow her to summon up old-school killing machines such as iron maidens and guillotines.

While the title is brimming with eye candy at every turn, it was these creative kills that made a lasting impression; watching her kick an enemy into one of these devices, then witnessing the resulting head-lopping, torso-impaling deaths, had me craving some play time in this strictly hands-off demo.

These wicked encounters should have prepared me for what was next, but I’m guessing nothing could prep even the most seasoned gamer for Bayonetta’s naughty bits-revealing hair attacks.

The bespectacled heroine is totally covered in hair, but unlike your Speed-O sportin’ uncle; her hair is more like form-fitting black leather, wrapping skin tight around her taunt. In fact, the only time it really looks like actual hair is when it unravels for a totally bizarre—and awesome—finishing attack. When a boss is weak, she unspools the menacing mane into an enormous hair dragon—I’m not kidding—while players mash buttons to ensure the hirsute beast finishes the fight. All the while, the mostly-naked Bayonetta watches on.

Admittedly, this alone sold me on the game. And despite having only a hands-off demo to check out, I see a lot of promise in this title.

Its adrenaline-amping action, engaging art style, and solid pedigree guarantee it a spot on my must-play radar. That said, I’ll need some hands-on time to get a true reading on its potential, as it’s breakneck pace could spell trouble if the camera and controls can’t keep up. Still, based on my brief time with Bayonetta, I’m already counting the days till our next date.

I predict ratings in the high 8's for this one...gameplay will probably be on the short side...

This is the level of advancement DMC4 should have made. Kamiya just simply makes the most enjoyable games! henshin a go-go, baby!

Hell Yeah this will be a day one purchase for me I like games like this. Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden, Heavenly Sword, Afro Samurai (have, but haven't played yet).

That's not new. GameStop has had that release date in their system since at least December, when it first showed up on the available pre-order lists. I know since I was scanning that list every time I visited my local shop to pick up my pre-orders - which was basically once a week between October and December of last year.

I don't visit GameStop to check release dates. That's what the internet is for.

I only visit there to pick up games that I've pre-ordered - it just so happens that I made something like twelve trips there in three and a half months late last year because there was good stuff releasing every week almost.

- 20 years ago, Bayonetta came back to life from a coffin sunk in the bottom of the lake with no memory of anything but her witchcraft. What little memory she has points her towards Vigrid, a remote region in Europe. She goes there in hopes of regaining her memory, there are angels in the way, etc. etc.

- The four hand/footguns are Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme, all together the Scarborough Fair.

- The shotguns, Onix Roses, are named after a type of rose that grow in the demon world. The souls of fairies that gather on the roses are stored inside the guns, and curse those shot by weapons.

- The sword is called Shurajin, named after the fighting dieties Asura. It's a living sword with a thirst for blood, consuming the souls of what it cuts.

- The whip Kulshedra is an ancient snake demon sealed into a weapon.

- Her fighting style is called Bullet Arts, the legendary style passed down by the witch clan since ancient times.

- Her hair magic technique is called Wicked Weave. She uses her hair as a catalyst to call forth aid from inhabitants of the demon world whom are bond by pact to aid her.

- She can also use the various implements of torture, once used against witches during the time of witch hunts, against the angels.

- She can summon massive demon beasts from the demon world. The one from the first gameplay trailer is Gomora, a beast that dwells in the forest of the demon world.

Today in Tokyo, SEGA announced multi-platform title Bayonetta will be ready to magical giant boot kick you in the face this fall.

The game, designed by Devil May Cry creator Hideki Kamiya, follows main character Bayonetta as she casts magical spells, shoots the shotguns in her high heels and wields four handguns and a katana.

The "Fall 2009" release date for Bayonetta is a simultaneous worldwide one.
