Lionsgate Films UK have revealed that they are planning to release on Blu-ray acclaimed Brazilian director Walter Salles' On the Road (2012), starring Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley, Kristen Stewart, Viggo Mortensen, Steve Buscemi, and Terrence Howard. The preliminary release date set by the studio is February 25th.

Earlier this year, On the Road was screened at the Cannes Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Palme d'Or Award.

Brazilian director Walter Salles helms this adaptation of the iconic novel by Jack Kerouac that defined the Beat Generation. Sam Riley stars as Kerouac's self-styled protagonist, down-and-out intellectual Sal Paradise, who takes to the backroads of America with his free-spirited friend Dean Moriarty (Hedlund) in a frantic odyssey fuelled by jazz, poetry and drugs in search of the 'it' at the heart of life.

This has already been released in France on Blu-Ray. I watched it yesterday and it is excellent. One caution for English viewers, the French sub titles are forced but some players will still let one turn them off. I was able to turn off the subtitles on my OPPO 93 set to Region B.

It appears that some players will allow turning off forced subtitles. Yesterday I watched the French Blu-Ray of ON THE ROAD. It is Region B with forced French subtitles. As soon as the movie started I selected subtitle and there were four options included OFF. I selected OFF and the screen prompt was "operation not allowed". I tried a second time and I still got the not allowed prompt but the subtitles turned off. I watched the entire film without subtitles. After the viewing, I tried again and was successful in turning off the subtitles in one of three attempts. I am not sure what the trick is - maybe timing or holding the button down for a couple of seconds????? My player was an OPPO 93 set to Region B. In another region select player (Insignia) I was not able to turn off the forced subtitles.

UPDATE - It does appear to be timing. After selecting PLAY, the subtitle button should be pressed and selection made to OFF while the studio opening logo is on and before the actual movie starts. The error message still shows (operation blocked by player) but the forced subtitles are indeed successfully turned off.

Anybody know if the German Blu-Ray has forced subs or anything like that just in case my Blu-Ray player doesn't allow them to be forced off? German version is the original cut like the French release and not the shorter UK version and what I am expecting North America to end up with. So would rather get one of the original cut releases and if the German version doesn't have forced subs seems like the better option just in case my player doesn't allow them to be forced off. 140 minutes vs 124 minutes just seems like a little bit too much has been cut off to me

Australia/NZ is the 137min version and thats region B for all you UK people (it was the version i saw in theatres too, would not want less in it.)

According to the info on imdb, the shorter cut actually contains more scenes - the longer version was a "rushed" release for Cannes and French distribution. Sallis doesn't offer a preferred cut, however.

Hi, I don't know where this info is coming from - that the French release is 140 minutes long - but at least as far as the press jackets/covers TF1 dispatched are concerned, it is incorrect. I even uploaded the back cover we received for the French release when it was announced on our site's profile, which indicates 135 min.

Edit: Ah-ha. I see. A former staff member added the 140 min. running time on the French release. Well, this info is incorrect. I have adjusted it. And we will have a review for the UK release shortly. Waiting on the screener.

Edit 2: And one more thing, some distributors are submitting the PAL timing for the Blu-ray releases they handle (which should appear only on their DVD releases). This further adds to the confusion.

The German Blu-ray does not have forced subtitles but there are only German subtitles available for the movie.
Extras: Additional Scenes (About 10 min in PAL Resolution: 576i / 25 fps, Englisch, German subtitles available), original and German trailer for this movie and some other trailers in German only.

Yeah was basing it on the run times listed and didn't look at the back cover.

Based on that last post the German version does run at 140 minutes though while the French Blu-Ray is 135 and the UK Blu-Ray is 124. How many cuts of this movie are floating around?

And thanks for the info about if the subs are forced or not pet42. Had already decided to chance it and order it since I was ordering some other stuff from Amazon.de but good to get confirmation they are not forced.

This is a very good question.

We just received the screener last night so our review will be up later this week. The UK release does indeed run at 124 min. My only guess here is that some, or all, of the deleted scenes are incorporated in the other releases mentioned above - but the deleted scenes are rather short, so the German release must be using a different transfer/cut. Very strange.

Car scene is my fave, looking forward to the Aus/NZ release, in a couple of week.

Again, just in case any one misses it the Aus/NZ release is 137mins.

I have no clue, it's odd. They show her sex scene (you cant see her face as well), but cut out part of that scene where you can clearly tell it's her topless in the car:\

I'm not from the UK so I really don't understand their censoring or rating system. Unless I got blu ray from amazon uk that was pressed wrong and missing stuff lol

The British Board of Film Classification has its flaws, but they only tend to cut out the extreme parts of films - certainly not just topless scenes. Hmmm, more research is needed on this, I think.

I think they may just be going with the re-editited version after the Cannes screenning, nothing to do with censorship?
