Talking Newbie!

Hello everyone! I joined earlier this week and have spent my time reading, not posting.

After a little over a year of nagging from me, my family (finally) upgraded to an HDTV and Blu-Ray player. I'm looking forward to going home tonight and watching my first Blu-Ray movie, 3:10 to Yuma.

Just be warned...... 3:10 to Yuma has INTENTIONAL grain, to give it a rustic feel I guess....... I'm sure if you've been reading you know all of this, and have seen the various recommendations for movies that will blow your socks off.

welcome by the way!

I haven't found the recommendations yet. Thanks for letting me know about them, and for the welcome.

You'll be amazed at how well older titles like The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, 2001, and Blade-Runner look on Blu-Ray.

It's not coincidence that three of the above mentioned are Kubrick.... his use of lighting shows the art in his craft.

2001 is one of the top rated for picture quality, and it's what.... 25 years old???? STUNNING.

More widely appreciated films (I understand not everyone can appreciate 2001 and A Clockwork Orange) would include:

Casino Royale
Cars/Ratatouilli if you have children (considered to be two of the BEST looking Blu-Rays available)
Sunshine is a newer Sci-Fi title... I thought it borrowed too much from some of the classics, but visually it's UNBELIEVABLE, and for a sci-fi flick, the story is good enough I guess.

If you like Documentaries, the BBC releases of "PLANET EARTH" and "GALAPAGOS" are absolute MUSTS.

Check the movie ratings on the homepage here too..... there are some duds out there like "house of flying daggers" I picked this up because it was only $10 or so, and it doesn't look much better than the DVD version (and I made the mistake of buying it based on expected video/audio quality only)

And of course, if you have Netflix, don't forget to set your preferences to "Blu-Ray"

I've never seen 2001 or Clockwork Orange. They will be added to my Netflix queue, along with Blade Runner and The Shining. My preferences were changed to Blu-Ray before I had the TV or player.

Don't have children of my own, but I've got a few little cousins who would love Cars or Ratatouille.

Sunshine was one of my favorite movies of '07, and I've got that Blu-Ray on order.

I've never been into documentaries or anything on nature, but I have been watching those channels more since we got the HDTV. It looks so beautiful!

Thanks for the recommendations!

even if you don't have kids, give cars or ratatouille a chance. they're very heart warming... the special someone would probably enjoy them too.
