Default paradigm better than Definitivetech?

i thought i had my mind made up between these two,i was going for the deftechs http://www.definitivetech.com/loudsp...inema_800.html somebody here on the forums name dannyjl recommended me these it looked like a good system so i went to bestbuy to here them they didnt have the procinema800 so they let me here the 600s, they sounded good but i needed to here 800s but right now bestbuy doesint have them. so anyway i shrugged it off thinking i dont have to here the 800 its a newer model so they have to sound better, so that was what i was going for.so today out of curiosity i call up one of the paradigm dealers to see if i could come and take a listen, then i ask him are the cinema systems good http://www.paradigm.com/en/paradigm/...-2-2.paradigm# and he starst talking about how great they are, then i say thats sounds good what do you think about Definitivetech? he says no comparason paradigms are way better! then i tell him i recently heard them and they sound great, he tells me where did you here from? i say bestbuy he starts to laugh and says thats what i thought. then he starts going on about how hes an expert in sound and ill give you the best speakers and about how deftech is no match.so now monday im gonna have to take a listen to the paradigms to see how they sound, i thought i was done choosing i guess not what do you guys think between the two?

Im not an expert on those two brands of speakers, now don't get me wrong they both sound good but the question to ask here is the receiver your are buying going to make them sound worse. I don't know how the sensitivity is of the speakers you are looking at but you would probably want to look at an efficient speaker since the Onkyo receiver you are looking to get is only pushing 90 watts. Plus check the impedance, I believe the receiver can only push a 6 ohm load or more per channel. If you are looking at 4 ohm speakers then this will not work.

Paradigm makes excellent speakers (I have the Mini-Monitors). The great thing about Paradigm, besides the great sound quality, is that they manufacture all their own components so it allows them to keep their costs down which equates to lower prices for the consumer. Don't let the lower price fool you. They are better than a lot of higher priced speakers.

I am not an expert but if you're going to use the speakers for home theater more I think Def Tech is better. If you are more into music than Paradigm is better.

+1

You definitely want to mate the right speakers with your amp, and with the 605 stick with speakers that are 6-8 ohm as recommended, and at least 89db sensitivity. I believe the Def Techs are in that range, but not sure about the Paradigms.

Paradigms are probably a better speaker, but would require a better and more powerful amplifier than the onkyo.

If you have the chance, the only way to know is to try them out in your room.
Yes, amp matching can be a factor, but room matching is much more so.

You need to listen to both and decide.

I also encourage you to go to hear the Paradigms, but also listen to a few of their other systems. You could get into some of their "Titan" models with a good sub, too. Something bigger than what comes with the Cinema series. I went there originally, because I wanted to purchase some Magnepans seven years ago. I happened to listen to the Mini-monitors, and couldn't get over the great sound (and they were much cheaper). I got a pair.

Just go... have a listen!

Yes, the audio boutiques can be snooty, and this is a turnoff, but it is fun yo go there and listen.

You also have to take into account of there set up. A dedicated home theater store will most definitly have the speakers set up better then any best buy. You need to find a store that sells both and compare. I use both companys in my house. My first set were paradigm atoms one speaker driver went on me and after 4 months finally got it back from paradigm. I personally like the sound of the deftechs they are especially better for movies. With out comparing them side by side you really cant tell the difference. And of course if the retailer selling the paradigms dosent sell deftech then hes just trying to sway your decision in his favor

Like someone else suggested in this thread, the only way to truly know which speakers you really should purchase are to go and hear them....

Someone who reviews speakers could tell you which ones are better and this is true, but their ear could appreciate qualities that yours do not....

Price range for speakers is also something that is very tricky to asses as well considering that some manufacturers of speakers charge to be competitive with other companies products in that same range, and other companies based on their names really create the performance for the price criteria....

Your best bet is to set a limit for yourself and then go to a store that sells either one of both of these products and listen to them.

Bring some familar CDs that you know quite well to be able to compare to what you have now, and maybe let you hear what you would want later...

At the end of the day, regardless of price or mass appeal, speakers are a very personal product that you yourself should appreciate and should be happy with....

I agree wholeheartedly. The best way to know which speakers are right for you is to audition them. Remember when doing so that the speakers will sound different in a demo room than your actual home room(whichever that may be). When playing a movie or CD through the speakers try and use a similar reciever you have at home. If you don't already have one, then play them through a reciever you plan on getting. This will give you a better idea of how they will sound with X or Y brand of reciever. Most importantly shop around. You can sometimes find better deals at A/V stores as they will sometimes give a discount on the amount of equipment purchased.

Here's my 2 cents. I also like the Klipsch Quintet III w/ Synergy 10'' sub. But went with Definitive. Never heard the Paradigm sound.

It's gonna be easier for you to test Definitive Tech speakers as they're available at every Magnolia Home Theater section of Best Buy. They sound great by the way.

It might be a little trickier finding a local Paradigm dealer near you as that brand is not as well known and mostly used by the high-end crowd.

Several years ago, when I bought my Paradigms, I actually preferred the far less expensive Mini-monitors over their Reference series, because the References sounded too bright. Now that I'm older, and my ears have changed, I like the sound of the Reference speakers more.

There are lots of factors that make us hear differently. Age really makes a difference.
