Default New HDTV...

Should I buy a new TV?

I must not have a great TV. I'm using a 40 inch sony bravia, that costed me around 2 grand a year ago. However I find that I can't really see the difference between Blu Rays and HD-DVD's (Quality Wise) Recently I purchsed Transformers and Face Off and they seem to be of good quality. I even picked up Top Gun for 16 dollars. I do notice that the supplements have to be on a extra disk though because it can't all be stored. But as long as the prices are under 28 dollars I don't have any real complaint about it all. I also picked up 2 of the more recent Pixar Films which looked Phenominal in Blu.

But my question is if I can't see a difference between HD-DVD and Blu Ray does it mean my TV is of low quality?

On just about all HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs, the same encode is being used. So the basic video quality is going to be the same.

Some companies are using difference encodes to take advantage of the larger size of blu-ray (i.e. Koch with Nature's Journey and Chronos). The blu-ray version of these releases IS a higher quality video encode, so you may see a difference there.

Despite many people on this forum claiming that HD-DVDs are nothing more than upconverted DVDs, the opposite is quite true. There's nothing wrong with your TV.

yeah, regardless of the tv or format of choice, HD will always look better than SD... unless of course you're running a old as hell CRT
