I really like the film but was surprised Criterion picked it up for release. I've been waiting for a physical media release for a couple of years so I'm very happy with this selection.
I should add though that I found the 'horror' elements the least interesting aspect of the film though I was mesmerised by the political/class aspects of the story. |

I rented the CC BD from my local shop and loved it. It's a great departure from the source material, but the way it uses themes worked for me. It is a slow burn for sure, but it's terrific. I will definitely be buying this in next month's sale.

Been thinking of getting this during the 50% off sale. I typically watch something if I think I'll enjoy it without relying on word of mouth. But, just askin', anyone else see this? I've watched the trailer a couple times was reading up on it. Sounds good.

I have this disc and really enjoyed it. Great atmosphere and good surround audio mix. Every frame was gorgeous to look at to my eyes. The narrative I would place in the tradition of some of the Val Lewton films (such as I Walked with a Zombie or the Body Snatcher) or perhaps the Twilight Zone in that it's not so much about indulging in cinematic horror, but uses horror elements to put a spotlight on actual societal/historical horror.

Just watched it. I thoroughly enjoyed this. It's not for everyone. And if you want a traditional "horror" film, then you may not like it. But it's more than just a horror film. It shows the horrors of war and privilege and the results of crimes committed against the innocent.

I finally watched this disc and I really like the film.
I did find myself consistently disappointed with the video quality. I am curious if it's just me. The whole film felt very soft, the subtitles are blurry and the compression felt quite poor. I wonder if my eyes are simply adjusting to 4K resolution. I'm viewing on a professionally calibrated Sony 65" A90J via a Panasonic 820. For reference I was just watching the CC Miller's Crossing today which is also a 2K scan if I'm not mistaken. I found the look/focus to be soft there too, but it seemed to be much more clearly related to how they shot it versus some kind of digital limitation. Any insight into the cinematography or encoding of this disc would be appreciated. I'm totally ignorant. What's wild is that Shudder is unwatchable to me with their 720p encodes and thus disc seemed to have a similar overall feel, just less visible blocking/crush. I know this model OLED has trouble getting just out of black. Maybe this film is riding on that edge a lot and highlighting the weakness of my set? Anyway, very good movie and I also love the art design on the CC packaging. The audio on this was phenomenal. Near constant surround activity used to truly immerse the viewer in its stage. Cheers! |
