Question Blu-Ray Annimation: Worth it?

I have recently been building my Blu-ray collection, but have not purchased a single animated movie on Blu-Ray. I always thought Pixar movies looked great on my TV, so I didn't think BR would make that much of a difference.

Does anyone have experience with these animated movies to tell me if it's worth the cost? As a HUGE Simpsons fan, I am debating whether blu-ray or standard DVD should be the way to go when the movie is released.

Thanks!

BR Movies owned: Planet Earth, 300, The Departed, Pirates 1 & 2, Talladega Nights

Ratatouille looks amazing. If you get a chance go by a Best Buy, they'll probably have it playing on one of their Blu-Ray displays. If not I'm sure one of the Magnolia guys would demo it for you.

Meet The Robinsons and Cars also both look great. Dinosaurs is an older title that I thought was pretty good and while not animated Corpse Bride might impress you.

If you have a PS3, go download the Simpson's trailer from the Playstation store. It looks ridiculously good, like it's being drawn in fresh ink right on your screen.

Cars and Ratatouille both look great as well, highly recommended.

For movies that are CG like the Pixar movies, Blu-ray is going to look really sharp, I strongly recommend giving one a try. Simpsons may not be as much of an upgrade, but still might be worth it if you have a big TV.

As far as 3D animation goes, it is most worth it! This is because there is no film to sample these from, they come from a straight digital source and everything can be perfectly adjusted. The focus will be perfect, the colors just as they are intended, the animation as fluent as possible.
2D animations really depend on what you are watching. If you want to watch a TV show like Family Guy, you can benefit a little, but the details are not there to really bring out the quality. However some movies like Howl's Moving Castle, Ghost in the Shell, Spirited Away, etc. can benefit greatly from this, because the fine artistic detail put into the characters, the patterns, and the backgrounds are often lost in a SD release, but would be clear and crisp on an HD format. In addition, you will add surround sound of the highest quality in addition to the image.
So for most tv animations, probably not, even some feature length animations have little to gain, but most full length animations will be worth a HD release.

I watched the Simpson's trailer on the F4:RoTSS BD, and I was amazed at the sharpness of the image and brightness of the colors. Animation clearly benefits from Blu-ray, so I would recommend it if you are a Simpson's fan.

Plus when you buy Ratatouille and Cars at Amazon you get the $10.00 off. So Cars is really just like $13.95...plus you get the new release of Ratatouille...if you don't like them you could always sell them here or on ebay...

Actually wd animation looks much better on blu-ray than on DVD, mostly because the black outlines have sharper (and smoother, weird huh?) tones to them. On DVD you get these strange "flashing" effects and small horizontal lines in the outlines, which is very offputting on larger Panels. Smooth, solid outlines really enhance the image. On the simpsons, though, there is not likely to be much use of the improved color pallette/contrast ratio, but the outline improvement sells it for me. Definately check it out. You'll see what I mean straight away.

Thumbs up

The disney animated films are just amazing. A definite buy on Blu-ray, especially Ratatouille and Cars. This is a great time to buy it as you get $10 off buying these 2.

I do wish I had the Ghost in the Shell series (both seasons) on BD... it would fix up a lot of issues I have with the compression they used (like interlacing) and would add all the detail i could ever want.

As for how 2-D animation looks on Blu, I see nobody's mentioned Lionsgate's "Doctor Strange" so far--
Which looks fantastic, btw.

("Ultimate Avengers" seems more of just an upgrading from the SD, so "Strange" was the first one produced with hi-def in mind.)
