Default An email from BB, picked up on another regular forum I frequent

"This email was sent to: [EMAIL_ADDRESS]
Discontinued product
Best Buy For Business logo
Dear Valued Best Buy For Business Customer,

You are receiving this email because you recently ordered a Toshiba HD DVD Player (model: HD-A2) and your order was placed in a backorder status while we awaited additional inventory. Unfortunately, the manufacturer has discontinued this item and we are not anticipating receiving any more inventory.

Because we value your business, we will be fulfilling your order with the next generation Toshiba HD DVD Player (model: HD-A3) that is replacing the HD-A2 in Toshiba's lineup of HD DVD Players. There is no need for you to do anything to receive this upgraded model. We will simply fulfill your order substituting the HD-A3 model. Your packing slip will be updated to show you received the HD-A3 model and this will serve as your order receipt.

If you are not interested in receiving the Toshiba HD-A3 as a replacement for the discontinued HD-A2, you may return the unopened item by simply contacting our Customer Support Team at 800-373-3050 for more information about how to return the product for a complete refund.

Please accept our apology for any inconvenience."

Interesting. I doubt Best Buy would take the loss on too many of those systems. They probably are only doing it for a few people who slipped through with their orders after their stock was depleated. I doubt this would happen now and the A2 is probably not even listed on their website anymore. Apparently Wal-Mart still has it in stock on their website though at $199.

This was widely reported over at AVS. What happened was when they reached the order limit they had for some reason the system did not stop taking orderer. So they oversold them. Many might think that BB has bad service but this shows how good it can be. So it is just them honoring what happened very good service.

That's not what it is

It's that BB sold off their remaining A2s months ago, and Toshiba screwed everyone but Wal-Mart, so becase BB is very important to them, they offered to compensate with A3s and lose even more

This really worries me as it will prolong this because it will increase disc sales once again

This will be valid only for the spillover A2 orders; I doubt they'll be selling the A3 for $98 or whatever once this batch of orders is fulfilled.

But yes, Toshiba have shot themselves in the foot with this firesale. There is no way they'll ever earn a profit on their format again, and they'll still get decimated in sales over this quarter.

Or perhaps Best Buy made Toshiba "an offer you can't refuse"?

Your statement is flawed in that these are poeple who had already intended to purchase (indeed actually did purchase) a HD DVD player. They're simply fulfilling the order as any company with half-way decent customer service would. Nothing to worry about...

It's been said many times before, but bears repeating, and please, don't take this personally:

No one here wants to hear about you (or any member) going out and deciding to support HD DVD, for any reason, as the name of the site is 'Blu-ray.com'. AVS was the forum for discussions of this nature, and we all know how well THAT turned out.

Duel format supporters are welcomed here, and encouraged to join, but the discussions are centered on Blu-ray, not HD DVD...

Great, and understood. But what's this thread about again? Oh yeah, the OP ordered an HD-DVD player and got a upgrade from BB. If the thread is here (and maybe it doesn't belong, it doesn't IMO, that's another story), why can I not comment on it? It's not like I promoted this. It was a very limited time offer...

For starters, thank you for taking the message as what it was, and not a personal attack. As far as the OPs actions, you're right, probably not appropriate in the end, but the difference is this: he is simply posting a fact, without any additional commentary such as "Wow! I got a free upgrade, this is cool, I'm glad I bought an A2 during the sale!" Instead it was left for the readers to decide how to take it, and early on I'd say most took it as another sign that Toshiba is going to lose big on this sale. For every A3 given away due to A2 unavailability there's one less A3 player being sold for retail. And I agree with another poster that I think Toshiba is the one taking the hit, not BB. At least that would be the better of the two.

So that's the difference, your post was "celebrating" the sale, while the OP was simply reporting on the aftermath. Subtle difference, yes, but that's why I think no one has attacked the OP for beginning this thread.

Also, if you'll notice, the OP is not saying that they had bought an A2, just that he found this copy of an e-mail from BB posted in another forum that he frequents. Again, interesting news, not support of HD DVD.

Not at all.

I don't believe I celebrated anything (notice the ). My point was I received the same thing from BB... but you're right, I could have just said that and moved on. Furthermore, I would hope nobody attacks the OP for posting this... crap like that makes this place just as bad as AVS.

I don't believe it was stated either way. But FWIW, only someone who ordered an A2 would have received this email.

True, and thanks for keeping the discussion civil. I think we all on here tend to be a little less emotional than they were on AVS. Not to say that we don't have our share of fanatics, but for the most part discussions are kept as just that: discussions.

Nothing but love for you my purple brother!

I think the friendly term we've started to use is "purple". Sorry to hear that you went from Blu to purple, but I also understand that many out here don't want to wait forever to experience thier favorite film in HD. here's to hopes that you remain entrenched in Blu's camp!

No need to get for things to get nasty, we are discussing a mutual passion. Unfortunately, some of our more colorful members/zealots can't help but start fires, but luckily there are only a few.

BTW, I'm a very bluish shade of purple.
