Symbolic montage is sometimes also refered to as Soviet or Russian Montage. This is the instance when you cut between two events to create a new meaning within the viewer and therefor it differs from the American tradition of cutting where you want to hide the cuts as much as possible to create continuity.
Hitchcock explains it better than I can. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruoPT9JeYHA Here a quite well - known examples from the Russian film "Strike" - Warning! contains images of animals being killed and slaughtered! Strike / Stachka - Sergei Eisenstein - 1925 (slaughter scene) The slaughter of the cows is symbolically linked with the people who are protesting. Coppola was inspired by this for the ending of Apocalypse Now. Another example is his "Baptism scene" in "The Godfather". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CDlBLvc3YE A more fragmented example is the opening of Bergmans Persona. Other examples are the odessa scene in "The Untouchables" which is a homage to Eisensteins "Battleship "Potemkin", The opening of "Don't look now", the drug scenes in "Requiem for a dream" and the ending of Hitchocks "North by Northwest". Where the last shot carries a symbolic meaning. ![]() http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPt-4Nwght0 Can you think of other examples? On a different note: Why are some Youtube Videos embeded and other aren't ? ![]() Last edited by kristoffer; 12-01-2013 at 11:11 AM. |
