Have any Ghibli movies been released on BD in Japan yet?

Assuming BD wins the war (and assuming John Lasseter doesn't get hit by a bus) I think we'll see Studio Ghibli on BD eventually.

I'd (or more correctly, my wife) would like to see Totoro on blu-ray. She's got a whole room in our house dedicated to Totoro. It'll eventually be our kids room. :-)

yes, you read my mind. Miyazaki on BD would be sweet, especially if it was released in a huge collection of all his films.

Currently Emotion (BanDai) is the only anime distributor in Japan releasing anime on blu-ray. There have been no announcements for Miyazaki films on blu-ray in either Japan or US. Miyazaki on blu-ray is like Star Wars on blu-ray.

Anime is down the list on what anyone "needs" to release....there is a relatively small group that will be buying these movies as opposed to something like Pixar movies....or anything else Disney puts out.

Miyazaki's films are positive goldmines in Asia, they're coming there is absolutely no question

But it won't be for at least another few years until the installed base gets bigger

I hope they do a new direct-digital for Spirited Away, because they did a normal telecine for the US release to get rid of the red push on the Japanese version (apparently Miyazaki-san did not believe that the LCDs becoming popular had strong enough reds and asked them to compensate). There was a noticeable reduction in fidelity between them

According to Anime On DVD http://www.animeondvd.com/ only one Ghibli film has been released on blu to-date, Iblard Jikan, reased by Buena Vista Home Entertainment Japan.

This is a 30 minute OAV with a series of painted scenes with music. Chris Beveridge's review is here...

http://www.animeondvd.com/reviews2/d...views/6587.php

Chris gave it good marks and I've been thinking of importing it myself.

Oh I disagree. Spirited Away, Howls Moving Castle, Kikki's Delivery Service, Porko Rosso and all the others are just as important to release as is Cars, Nemo and anything else Pixar/Disney decides to release. If Disney promoted them like Ratatouille and their other releases, I think you would see they could be major sellers.

This sadly is not entirely true. As it would be nice that Miyazaki was that popular in the united states, he still isn't even a household name yet.

Disney does sell a great deal of Miyazaki films on DVD, however, total sales of say Sen to Chihiro are a mere fraction of what the average Pixar film brings in. People's ways of thinking will have to be changed first. I honestly do not see Disney advertising Miyazaki films at the same level as pixar films simply because Disney did not make them. If Miyazaki moved to america and worked for Disney to make something. Then oh yes, it would definatly happen.

Definately not when you're looking at dollars

Miyazaki sells as well or better than Pixar in Asia. While Kiki moved a million on VHS, AI have no idea as to other figures on the DVD sales.

Pixar on the other hand moves multiple millions in every area of the world, and all their films look scrumptious in HD.

It's an obvious choice, and this is coming from someone who saw Mononoke theatrically in Japan only understanding every fifth word.

Perhaps we could consider the value it's not being contemplated here. For instance, Alfred Hitchcock's movies have a great importance and "weight" to any format or studio responsible for its release, naming it reputation for excellence. That's just what miyasaki's films mean. Something a hddud supporter was claiming right here in these forums, that it was about blockbusters vs meaningful movie making.

No, wasn't really looking at dollars so much as I was looking at how these movies being released by Disney on Blu could open up a whole new audience to these films. I do remember when Spirited Away came out on DVD here in the States, and Disney did do quite a bit of advertising to announce it's arrival. If I remember correctly, I think it sold very well. Granted, some of the Miyazaki titles might not do so well (The Cat Returns and a few others) as Spirited Away or Kikis, but it would open the doors for people eventually wanting those titles. Once you see one of his films, you want all the others. I think I finally got all his titles in various forms (Region 1 NTSC, R2 PAL, R4 PAL). Either way, I hope they do get here (or in Japan). They will be in my collection.

I'm in dire need of any 2-D animation in HD.

And if I were to choose:

Disney maybe slow in releases especially the older classics. However it's a shame not all studios do the same. The pride Disney take with their films is nothing short of admirable. In the corporate world of a quick buck Disney resists and they release quality. I would prefer them to take longer and get high quality rather than fast and low quality.

There are some other studios that are also doing the same.

It's good to see that Blu-ray group have not adopted the "good enough" attitude.
