Default Your Anime Firsts & Bests

We all like to show our anime collections but sometimes it's a bit hard to personalise them to others.

I thought it be interesting to show your first anime DVD or Blu-ray purchase and maybe a word or two as to why they were your first. They could also be your first UK, US, or Japanese release as well. Or they could be the first DVD/VHS/BD you rented from Blockbuster that sent you on to your Anime journey.

And then there are the favorites in your anime collection.

You don't have to include them all in just one post. Maybe you could dedicate one post to your first Japanese blu-ray and another to your favorite anime DVD in your collection.

Some of these ideas have been posted in other anime threads but I though it would be a good idea to have a dedicated thread for all your 'firsts' and 'bests'.

I hope to see this thread succeed, but if it turns into a dud then so be it. The people have spoken.

So I'd like to get this thread running with my first Anime DVD purchase.

[Show spoiler]image.jpg

When I started my DVD collection the original idea was to have just one anime show, and I thought if I was going to have just one then why not with this classic. Back in 2004 when I purchased Volume 1 I never imagined I would get another anime DVD. But here I am today where I've purchased hundreds of DVDs since then. Some have fallen on the way side but this 'first, is still with me.

So what was one of your firsts?

My first was the Tokyo Pop Initial D stage 1 set. It was before Funimation licensed the series and put it out.

I'm pretty sure Serial Experiments Lain Volume 1 was my first DVD purchase back in '99. Man, I'm getting old enough to have trouble remembering...

First one I bought was Ranma back in the VHS days, which is also my favorite series, so I've since bought the DVDs and now the Blurays. First one I watched was Project Ako my brother had.

Let me see, the first anime title I ever purchased was the Fox VHS release of My Neighbor Totoro. I was looking around our local video store when I was eight and saw it for sale. Needless to say, I absolutely loved it and it was the film that sent me down the path of my anime addiction.

Oh man, who's gonna be the first poster to say Voltron or Robotech or Transformers were their first anime

Anywho...

My first? Fist of the North Star back in '91. I don't remember my first dvd, but that woulda been in '99/'00 (maybe Ghost in the Shell). I don't even remember my first bluray, let alone what year. But the best release I've ever seen/purchased on any format would be the entire Dragonball Z Dragonbox collection. Perfect packaging, great extras, and a perfect release of the content.

First VHS was technically The First Pokemon Movie but I consider Gundam 08th M.S. Team vol. 1 & 2 my first real anime purchase.

First DVD was 08th M.S. team vol. 3 & 4.

First Bluray was Evangelion 1.11 (I was late to the bluray bandwagon)

Voltron.

Except... Norbie is asking about purchases. I came to this thread thinking he just meant "your first anime".

Also, I was a little kid and didn't know what anime was then.

First purchase I'm pretty sure was the FLCL Ultimate Collector's set (the last Synch-point version). I was also buying Cowboy Bebop in the (then new) Remix DVDs, but I'm sure FLCL came before the first CBB volume.

Man, I really dont know.

Whne i got into anime, the lates boom was only just starting, i think. It was in the year 2000. Bootlegs were a thing, and option, and i didnt know any better. My first show i watched was Love Hina. I probably bought bootlegs of that, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Nadesico... Maybe just a few more...

My collecting turned to proper DVDs quickly. I dont thinki replaced those bootlegs right away, but they all got replaced eventually. I have no idea what it could have been that i bought first.

Bluray should be easier to remember. Wjo put out an anime BD first? Was it Funi's Samurai 7 and Basilisk releases? I probably jumped on those pretty quickly, hoping that more would follow.

Oddly enough, I can still remember (it did take some thinking though, lol) my first VHS purchase but can not remember my first DVD and BD ones.

For VHS, was still in high school and remember using money saved from part time job to get Patlabor. Patlabor was what started my anime addiction.

For DVD, I think first purchase was Princess Mononoke, or Tenchi Muyo but I really can't remember.

Blu-ray, it was either Tekonkinkreet, Paprika, or Diebuster/Gunbuster.

What was that like? I've never came across the UMD format myself. It never really took of in Australia as far as I can remember, although I'm sure there are a few dedicated collectors here.

And do you still have it in your collection?

My first vhs was wicked city in '92.
Don't remember my first DVD though.
First blu-ray was the Bandai Royal space force aka wings of honneamise in 2007, but I only remember that because it was a combo with the dvd. Didn't have a blu-ray player at that time

UMD didn't take off anywhere

Some stores had a few movies in stock that obviously never sold until they were like 90% off. It was destined for failure any which way you look at it.

I remember when the new files box set for Patlabor came out. It had that awesome scene on the side with the Griffin laughing with the Patlabor head. I also remember it being $100 and taking me a while to get Its a shame they don't do cool packaging like that anymore.

Never hit the VHS craze for anime....but when I got into anime, the dvd age was upon us all....I'd say around 2001-ish is when I started to actually buy anime. I was using Netflix the year before that..... I do keep records of anime purchased. My first purchase was Trigun Perfect Collection....

First anime VHS: Tenchi Muyo! in Love (1997)

First anime DVD: Tenchi Muyo! DVD Ultimate Edition (2000, also first DVD ever bought)

First anime Blu-ray: Evangelion 1.11 (2010, also one of first three BDs ever bought)

Tenchi Muyo! wasn't my first anime, but it was the first to make me a fan. Because of my meager funds as a teenager, TM was almost exclusively the only anime I collected on VHS. Three years later the capabilities of DVD blew me away (and led to me becoming a firm sub-only fan), and the Ultimate Edition remains the emotional center of my video collection.

Evangelion is one of my favorite anime series/franchises (along with Tenchi Muyo! and Gundam), but at the time I bought 1.11, it was simply because it was ~$10 and I picked it up along with my first Blu-rays and a PS3 after starting a new job.

Man they pushed UMDs hard, sadly I fell for it and bought several anime UMDs(Akira & Ghost in the shell).
