United Kingdom The Assassin (Elio Petri)

The Assassin Blu-ray

Elio Petri's directorial debut: The Assassin.

It should be one of the year's top releases. Should be using the same 2K restoration Carlotta's French release uses, which is beautiful

I won't upgrade my Carlotta, but kudos to arrow for bringing Petri to their Academy label. I can only hope that this won't be the last one.

Also from director Elio Petri available on English-friendly Blu-ray/DVD:

INVESTIGATION OF A CITIZEN ABOVE SUSPICION

CRITERION RELEASE

LUCKY RED RELEASE ITALIA

THE 10TH VICTIM

BLUE UNDERGROUND RELEASE

SHAMELESS RELEASE

A QUIET PLACE IN THE COUNTRY

Director Elio Petri's A Quiet Place in the Country. The MOD DVD release uses a pretty good transfer. Included are Italian Dolby Digital 2.0 and English Dolby Digital 2.0 tracks, with optional English subtitles. Anamorphic transfer. The only extra is the original trailer for the film.

Now we need someone to release WE STILL KILL THE OLD WAY and PROPERTY IS NO LONGER A THEFT to complete the trilogy.

Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion is the first film in director Elio Petri's Trilogy of Neuroses. The other two entries are Lulu the Tool a.k.a. The Working Class Goes to Heaven (1971) and Property Is No Longer a Theft (1973).

I've never seen this one but it looks exquisite. I echo the comments above calling for more Petri - Todo Modo looks very intriguing but isn't on DVD anywhere.

Koch Media in Germany put out a Petri dvd box last year, which apparently has English subs for We still kill, and a quiet place. No english subs for Lulu, though.

There's also a region 2 DVD, albeit more expensive in the UK (7 Euro at Amazon ES):

Yes, but from what I gather, it doesn't have the italian audio track which is a letdown for a Petri movie.

On the other hand, I think Minerva Classics has also "I giorni contati" in its dvd library.

The 'I Giorni Contati' DVD is an O1 release, not a Minerva release. Raro Italy did release 'Lulu The Tool' on DVD in Italy: http://www.amazon.it/Classe-Operaia-Va-Paradiso/dp/B00ABXSRNI/ref=sr_1_11?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1393010903&sr=1-11&keywords=Elio+Petri, so hopefully Raro USA may release it on blu-ray. And as Arrow have licensed a number of Raro releases, then it may get an Arrow release. I really hope so!

'We Still Kill The Old Way' is the Petri that I want the most now. It would be great to see his filmography all get English friendly releases though. It's beyond baffling why such a great director has been overlooked for quite so long.

'The Assassin' is a superb debut and combined with a superb transfer, this release should be a nobrainer for anyone sitting on the fence.

But I thought that the film was originally shot in English.

Italy L'ASSASSINO - ( The Assassin ) - Elio Petri - 1961 - Carlotta French Label

...Hello Svet, hope you will pleasure to have the following information about the Technical details of the Restoration of this splendid Masterpiece !

....This is my review, I wrote and published previously in other Forums this year, in the month of February .

...The Movie...:

...First and already biting Feature (Censored obviously with no reason at the time) of Master's Petri, with interesting insights Psychological Kafkaesque Bergman style , that "masked" from Noir (and we can damn well) shows the relationship between man "Common" and authority , with its blatant "errors" of (pre)judgment and red tape, very dear to the petri dish, which we'll face the best example in the masterpiece "Investigation of a citizen Above suspicion" .

...Mastroianni and Randone EXCEL ! .

...The BD Disc...:

...The BD of the French Label Carlotta, needless to say is G O R G E O U S !

...Here below, details of the New 2K Scan Restoration...:

"The Digital Restoration of L'ASSASSINO, was produced from the Original OCN , lacking the first and last reel, as well as a interpositive Era .

The two elements were Scanned in 2K resolution and Digitally Restored .

The Color grading was performed using as reference a copy of the Age Positive, preserved by the production company Titanus in the Archives of the Cinematheque of Bologna .

The original soundtrack has been restored from 35mm Negative optical, which in turn was printed a Positive Column of conservation, which later was acquired and digitally Restored .

All operations and the steps of processing were performed at the Laboratory of Bologna "L'Immagine Ritrovata" in the 2011 . "

...The detail is extraordinary ( close-ups of Mastroianni and Beautiful Cristina Gaioni, the walls of the cell, etc.... are fantastic detailed ) medium-fine grain barely noticeable and perfectly managed, sublime gray scale, contrast and black level really excellent !

...Bitrate always very high (I've seen peaks of 34-35 Mbps, maybe even more) average of 23-26 Mbps, AVC encoding, zero filters, Italian audio track in DTS-HD-MA 1.0 Mono (with French sub-OPTIONAL REMOVABLE), really great, that beautifully reproduces the wonderful soundtrack by Piero Piccioni .

...About the Extra, we have two interviews (16 and 17 minutes, approximately) to the wife of Petri, Paola Pegoraro Petri, in HD but unfortunately in French, in any case I've seen anyway, because its easy to follow .

...Really a GEM !!!

...This is the History of Our (Italian) Cinematography, the TRUE that once...

...I really think that the new BD release for the UK market , from ARROW Label, will use this new and STUNNING Restoration from 2K Scan , and obviously will have English subtitles !

Nope, they haven't said anything about the release yet. Their website still says "to be confirm/more announced" on artwork & features.

With the release date been May 19th and lack of info. I wouldn't be surprised if it was pushed back.

Also, is this film actually any good? It's the only title Arrow have announced this year that has my attention(slightly).

"It is looking like will have to we delay it until 21st July. We will be releasing an announcement soon so please check back."

Shame, but I thought it might be pushed back too. I've only seen 'L'Assassino' once but I would definitely recommend it. Although I would place other Petri films higher in his filmography like 'Investigation Of A Citizen Above Suspicion' and 'We Still Kill The Old Way', I would still rate it as one of his best films.
