Back in July, Sega announced their voice synthesizing iOS app Song Composer 575 and PS Vita game Song Builder 575 as part of Project 575, which Sega teased for an entire month. Although the iOS app has been available in Japan since July 26, Sega has just announced that Song Builder 575 will be released on January 23.

Song Builder 575 is described as a “song building action game” with elements of a rhythm game and a word puzzle game. As a song plays, the lyrics will be displayed onscreen, and you will tap the touch screen to the rhythm and also fill in blanks.

The game will also have a story centered around the heroines Azuki and Matcha. When Azuki is tired of her normal life, she becomes inspired to use the 5-7-5 pattern of haiku to create songs, perform them with her friend Matcha, and upload them on their own website.

The game will also come in a limited edition package that includes a PS Vita pouch shaped like a school bag, a card case shaped like a student handbook, two cell phone straps, and Azuki’s and Matcha’s student IDs.

People who pre-order the game will also get an art booklet and a CD with three songs.

Following yesterday’s announcement, Sega has shared a trailer demonstrating their upcoming PS Vita rhythm game Song Builder 575, part of their Project 575.

Like in a traditional rhythm game, you tap the touchscreen to the rhythm as the heroines Azuki and Matcha sing. The lyrics are also displayed onscreen, and you have to fill in blanks every few verses. Thanks to the Vocaloid technology loaded in the game, the girls will sing whatever syllables you choose, even if you pick them in the wrong order. As the girls perform, you will gather more audience members.

The game will contain songs created with the iOS app Song Composer 575, including works by popular artists from Nico Nico Douga. In addition, there will be a story following Azuki and Matcha as they seek to enliven their ordinary lives. Azuki is voiced by Yuka Otsubo, whereas Matcha is voiced by Ayaka Ohashi. They are designed by Hiro Kanzaki, the character designer of the novel/anime series My Little Sister Can’t Be This Cute.

Song Builder 575 is slated for release for the PlayStation Vita on January 23.

Sega previously released a trailer demonstrating their upcoming rhythm game Song Builder 575, but their two newest videos focus on mascots Azuki and Matcha’s singing and dancing talents. The game includes songs created by famous Vocaloid composers with Sega’s companion iOS app Song Composer 575. Meanwhile Azuki and Matcha are designed by Hiro Kanzaki of My Little Sister Can’t Be This Cute fame.

The first video features the very first song revealed by Project 575, Tobidase Jugyou!, composed by Lamaze-P, who is known for his Vocaloid song PoPiPo.

The second song is GosHicHiGo! from cosMo@Bousou-P, the Vocaloid composer whose works include The Disappearance of Hatsune Miku. As you can see from the two videos, the game features different costumes and backgrounds from the girls’ hometown of Kamakura.

Song Builder 575 is scheduled to be released for the PS Vita on January 23. People who pre-order the game also get an art booklet and a CD with the song Tobidase Jugyou! and two other songs.

575's*story follows leads Azuki and Matcha, who lead normal, everyday school lives. That is, until one day Azuki stares at a riverside willow, and being deeply moved, utters the magic words “575…” creating their little music group.

While Matcha seems a little bit non-plussed at this, she goes along anyway, because that’s what awesome close friends are for. As players progress through the story, they’ll unlock and play new songs such as the aforementioned Tobidase Jugyou! (Fly away Homework!). The game is pretty nifty, in that it hooks and syncs with another game/song composer for iOS Song Composer 575. This is one such situation, with Vocaloid song creator Lamaze-P behind Tobidase Jugyou!.

The music is said to follow the seasons, so you’ll be able to get variations in costumes, pacing, backgrounds and music selections just by following the life of a couple of high schoolers through a year of school. You’ll also have to make use of both the front and back touchscreen on the PlayStation Vita—a feature sadly underutilized in my opinion—during what Sega is calling their brand new style of “Music Group Actions”.

While you’re hitting along to the game’s basic rhythm bopping, which are the lyrics to the song you’re currently playing, some will appear in the middle of the screen. It’s up to you to quickly tap the correct side of the screen to synch up the words with the lyrics and get the gals to sing in tune. Amusingly, if you get it wrong, they’ll sing it anyway. Ahh, such is the awesomeness of friendship.

If you thought the characters kinda looked familiar, that’s because they’re made by Hiro Kanzaki, the character designer behind My Little Sister Can’t Be This Cute! The voice actresses to are pretty big, with Azuki’s seiyuu being Yuka Otsubo and regal highness Matcha voiced by Ayaka Ohashi.
