They obviously spent their down time writing a new set of rules, which cover a lot of the ground that was being misused. It's going to be a little tough for some of those more obnoxious posters to find anything to write about now. Too bad.

But the numbers thread has been shut down for now again. So even with the numbers you are not allowed to talk about them I guess.

I have my doubts that the "new" AVS forum would be any different than before, just because of some new rules. The problem remains precisely the same as it was before (and what rules existed then vs. now had maybe 1% to do with the "real" problem). The "real" problem lies with the ability to perform moderation consistently for everybody and the willingness to eliminate troublemakers. This acknowledgment was absolutely missing from the "word from the moderators" post that announced the HDM section would be closed for a period of time. That suggests that they lacked any understanding of their own contribution to why things ended up the way they did. They just plainly panned it off as the fault of the people who were there and their behavior (which is only partly true). Hence, my belief that if they cannot acknowledge their own complicity in the matter and failure to control the situation, nothing can really change.

The people that were there are a product of who they allowed to stay and who they decided to ban.

The types of posts and the kinds of topics that appeared there were the product of what they decided to allow posted and what they chose to "delete".

There's no way around this. They can make all the rules they like, but it won't help anything if they don't care to moderate consistently, genuinely foster a neutral environment, and recognize the actual troublemakers that infest the site. Now they are stuck with a certain "clientèle" that they have, and there is simply no impetus left at the forum to push the discussions in a "neutral" direction. The "same" people will simply spawn the same kinds of discussions/zealotry, and the mods will simply pick and choose topics/posts/members to disappear so as to give the impression that things are running "smoothly".

The new list of rules strategy they chose is akin to declaring that symptoms "xyz" are no longer allowed here and hoping that the problem that spawns the symptoms spontaneously disappears. I don't know about y'all, but it doesn't look like something that will work to me.

That's my 2 cts.

AVS is wiping out signatures left and right. They even removed mine with simply stated "blu" and linked to my list of Blu-rays at DVDSpot.com. Yikes, a bit overboard but if that's what it takes to start cleaning up that mess I'm a-ok with it.

They want there members to appear neutral so they can get away with more pro HD-DUD polls in there so called Blu-rays forums.

Well according to the new rules half of the posters would get banned if they kept up their old habits, along with 90% of the posts.

And yes, I used a long drawn out scientific formula to arrive at my figures.
