Xbox One System Update Thread

Well, I wanted to post a complete guide as to how to update your Xbox One with the day one update -without- the need to connect online (Microsoft, in a bout of lucidity, posted an entire website about the process yesterday).

Unfortunately, this morning, MS pulled the website and is now backtracking, telling Eurogamer that the update will -have- to be done online via XBL.

This -was- the process as planned yesterday as a work around the possible (and likely) network congestion of launch day

First, you'll need to find out which operating system number your Xbox One is currently running.

Press the Xbox button to return to Home.
Press the Menu button and select Settings (or select Settings on the Home screen).
Select System.
Select Console info.
Your OS version is the third row down, listed as Build number.

Next, you'll need to ready your USB drive on your computer.

Plug your USB flash drive into a USB port on your computer.
Format the USB as NTFS (USB must have at least 2 GB of space).
You'll need to select the correct OS version from Microsoft's FAQ page to be able to install it properly.
Click Save to save the console update .zip file to your computer.
Unzip the file. If you're using Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7, double-click the .zip file to unzip it.
Copy the contents of the .zip file to the root directory of your flash drive.
Unplug the USB flash drive from your computer.

Lastly, transferring the update to your Xbox One.

Unplug the network cable if you're using a wired network connection.
Power off your console, and then unplug the power cord to ensure that the console is completely powered off.
Wait 30 seconds.
Plug the power cord back in.
Plug the flash drive into a USB port on your Xbox One console.
Press and hold the BIND and EJECT buttons, and then press Power On.
Continue holding the BIND and EJECT buttons for 10-15 seconds.
Listen for two "power-up" tones a couple of seconds apart.

If you don't hear the two power-up tones after 10 seconds, then the update has failed. If you do, the update has been successful, and the Xbox One will now restart (which may take several minutes, Microsoft warns).

As you will notice, there are apparently -2- versions of the OS in the wild.
The update itself was rated at 1.24Gb, which is why the process require(d) a 2Gb USB flash drive at minimum.

Citing "complexity" for users, MS pulled the page and link this morning and gave this update to Eurogamer:

"The site was not an alternative way to take the Day One update and customers still need to connect to Xbox Live for the update," a spokesperson said. "Because of the complexity of this customer support process we've actually removed the page and we will work with customers directly to make sure they have a smooth experience."

To all future Xbox One owners, I wish you good luck with the process (better cross fingers), and hope you will have an excellent time (tonight?) tomorrow with your new games

Wut?

I was merely saying better cross fingers because with thousands of people accessing the update simultaneously (just like for the PS4) it can end up in prolonged downloads or even being blocked at times (possible servers going down too). We are also talking about a 1.24Gb file here, not a 300Mb one.
WTH does this has anything to do with PS4 bricking or whatever? (not that the 1.5 update bricked anything in and off itself actually)

P.S: And yes, I have neither a PS4 or a XB1

It's nice for me to step away from this joint for a day and come back to find the same bitterness on both sides of the fence.

Elandyll's right... Servers are gonna get slammed as this rollout occurs. I think MS is a little more prepared (and Azure's load balancing will help), but there's still a very good chance that it will take some time before your system is ready to rock. Fingers crossed for a smooth rollout!

I think that by "Bind" button they mean the pairing button, used to pair your devices with the console.

2- Eject hole: to force eject a disc in case of problem
3- Pairing (Bind?) button, to pair wireless devices

Can I just ask a question about this fanboy thing? I am a Sony fan, I try not to bash the Xbox (after all I do have a 360 and have been a live member for over 10 years. And all I go to show for it is a stupid helmet for my avatar) but of course I want so see Sony crush MS with this console. I relate it to football, I am a Detroit Lions fan, everytime they play I want them to crush the other team. I dont want to see a good game, I want a 63-0 blow out everytime. Now what I dont want is to see some one get hurt, reguardless of team ( see a console break ) just asking for your thoughts and comments it. Why is it when we pick a favorite console we get labeled fanboys??

Having a favorite console is one thing, but the battle lines over it on every internet discussion medium is quite another. It makes for a lot of senseless, hostile inanity that has nothing to do with what actually matters, like the games, and it drowns out any intelligent discussion there is to be had.

What's the rush?

I mean I had PS4 running for probably 2 hours before I even put a disc in. Was checking out Its OS & adjusting user settings. Think I even had a snack while it was on.

1.24GB this time right. That is awesome. Still crossing fingers for dual band WiFi support. I know people say it makes no difference but N "dual" has max 1,850MB/s speed over N which its max is 450MB/s

So we're clear, having a preference for one console over the other isn't what being a "fanboy" is. Fanboyism is when you prefer one console and then actively go out of your way to demean the other console or constantly naysay it. It's a very negative way to be... and kinda' ridiculous, because we're all gamers and the competition tends to be good for all of us over time.

LIONSFAN20's comparison to two competing football teams isn't really a great one, since realistically, both consoles can be successful with no real problems. But it mostly comes down to human nature, as people tend to feel a need to defend their financial choices. You see the same thing with fans of particular brands of cars. Still, the vitriol that console wars seem to bring out is a pretty unique phenomenon. I'm just glad that (for the most part) people here have TRIED not to beat the fanboy drum too much.

But only 1 team wins the Super Bowl at the end of the year, and I always foolishly hope its the Lions. Again I like Sony and I'm loving my PS4, however I find myself exploring the Xbox One more and more, despite saying I was not going to get one.
