Default Movie Product Placement

Product placement has been proven to work just as well if not better than a commercial. I am sure if one of the main characters in a Disney/Sony/Lionsgate/MGM movie had a Blu-ray player in the house it would help move units. Instead of having that mall presentation Disney does, they could shove in a scene where the main characters are talking about something and a Blu-ray Cars or Ratatoulie is playing in the backround or something like that. Even if one of them just says "damn that is a good picture" or something. I am sure that would help a lot more than anything else.

Enough money gets paid for product placement that it ought to do something, I guess...

Personally I hate it: few things ruin my willing suspension of disbelief like conspicuous product placement. When I finally watched Transformers to see what all the fuss was about, product placement became an early & recurring complaint of mine; if I wanted commercials, I'd watch TV.

There are exceptions, I guess. Where would Reese's Pieces be without ET? My personal fave: the big Coke sign in Blade Runner...maybe because of the time I've spent in neon shops.

Did you see Casino Royale? Did you notice the use of Blu Ray disks for the security system? I thought it was a nice touch seeing as i was watching it on Blu Ray.

A future where Atari is a global electronics megacorporation, where Perrier is the drink of choice, and Pan Am offers trips to the off-world colonies, and you liked the Coke sign??

Transformers was way overdone in this regard, I especially hated how they made all the cars GM copies since GM was the highest bidder! The movie was always going to make its budget back, they could have easily done without the GM money and kept the original cars. At least in some cases.

I liked how the Truman Show made fun of product placements though

The police car was a Ford Mustang.

I think one of the first was a director promoting one of his earlier films. Have a look at a clockwork orange. In the record store the title that sticks out is the soundtrack (presumably) of 2001.

And Wayne's World ... if you can't hide it, flaunt it.

Ditto. And did you notice that they had not just one, but like four or five BDP-S1s lined up under the bank of monitors?

Casino Royale is full of Sony product placement...Bond's cellphone is Sony-Ericsson, as is Vesper's. All of the laptops are likewise VAIO. Not to mention the all-American Ford he drives in the Bahamas.
