United Kingdom Dragon Lord - 88Films. Jackie Chan classic announced

Released in 1982, Dragon Lord was Jackie's follow up to The Young Master that is best remembered for its Sports-Fu theme and insane physicality of some of its action set pieces.

Here's a couple of trailers:

If they were, they certainly built it up for months on my end

Think I've only seen this one once or twice a long time ago, so definitely looking forward to watching it again.

I hope it sounds (in fact I'm sure it will) better than the HKL which was like having cotton wool shoved in your ears!

One of the things I am looking most forward to for this release is how the subtitling will be for the poem reciting scene. This is such a hard scene to understand for Western audience, even with my limited Cantonese I cannot grab the wordplays here at all :P Hope the one among us (definitely not me) that has taken on this job will churn out something good.

Gareth Evans had stated that much of Jackie Chan's stunt work (and Dragon Lord) was a big influence on the first Raid film, so seriously can't wait to pick this up.

The final battle (rematch) with Hwang In-Shik (also from Young Master) is one of my favourites. I can't remember much else apart from the Hacky Sack game that must have taken forever to film.

I can only assume that we are. I mean if they did it for heart of dragon, dragons forever, protector and miracles, then it's looking good. Plus, dragon lord is notorious for having like six million alternate cuts.

Fixed, but it's a shame Dragon Lard was never used as a nickname for Sammo in one of their three dragon movies!

Why yes we are.

I want to do three versions but that would require a 2nd disc most likely.

I only know of four versions.

1. Hong Kong theatrical cut. (TC)
2. Alternate Asian cut. (AA)
3. Export cut. (EC)
4. Miramax Cut (MC)

Differences between TC and AA:
https://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=298269

Basically, AA has a longer version of the rugby match, a longer version of Jackie's poetry recital, longer conversation between Chan Wai-Man and Whang In-Sik, longer version of the shuttlecock game, a new scene with the matchmaker, and some other bits and pieces...

Whilst TC has a fight between Chan Wai-Man and Whang's men, a comedy encounter between Jackie, his friends and local girls, and the cannon scene at the end.

I prefer TC because none of AA's extended scenes needed to be extended, and were already a touch sluggish to begin with. The pacing in the TC is much better. AA's rugby climax is an anti-climax whereas TC's comedy bit is a funnier way to cap the mayhem.

The only scene from the AA I would like to see restored is the extended conversion between Whang-In-Sik and Chan Wai-Man, if only to avoid that obvious jump cut.

Here are the differences between the TC and MC:

The EC is a shorter version of the TC.

I just hope the video compression is really good, both in motion and on a screenshot level. (Dragons Forever had a ton, and I mean a ton of blocking when viewed frame-by-frame. Now, it looked fine in motion, but by reducing the amount frame-by-frame, it'll look better in motion as well)

This is an underrated movie imo. Personally I prefer it to The Young Master.

Been years since I've seen it, but the Universe Laser version could also count as its own cut, considering it ends right after the final fight... I'm assuming this was a cut that Jackie put together after whittling down the film, but didn't shoot the cannon ending yet.

On that note, you're also right about the pyramid/bun match being anti-climactic in that longer cut, as the cannon ending works as appropriate "falling action" to end the film on. And putting the match at the beginning of the film definitely saves the film from otherwise taking too long to get to any action.

Shockingly, the Miramax cut isn't the shortest version, lol. Really all that's trimmed is a bit from the pyramid/bun match and the shuttlecock match. It even has all of the HK cut footage missing from the "alternate Asian" cut, plus maintains the original music score... The English dub, however, is the usual Miramax cartoonish style, lol.
