Seems a branch of Microsoft has announced that the external HD DVD drive for the 360 will not support games done on the HD DVD disks. This sounds extremely odd to me.

From a business standpoint it makes sense... Take Final Fantasy XI for PS2 for example. In order to run the game, you needed a hard drive. So they included the hard drive with the purchase of the game and charged somewhere around $100. The hard drive wasn't really good for much outside of FFXI. Many people didn't buy the game simply for this reason. Think about how many games they could have sold if the hard drive wasn't required.
So for X360, if MS started makes HD-DVD games, then they would be producing them for a very niche market, and potentially make no money at all. People didn't want to shell out ~100 for a game and a hard drive, what makes you think people will want to shell out ~200 + the price of games to play X360 games. The fact of the matter is, major addons such as hard drives and disc drives scream afterthought. |

Actually, MS have been saying this for a number of months now, but still they get asked if it will support games! No it won't. Games on Xbox360 will only ever be on DVD.
The thing is, they can't start offering games on HD-DVD as that would mean everyone has to buy the add on. Developers HAVE to create games for the lowest common denominator; that being the Core 360 without hard drive, let alone the HD-DVD drive! I agree, it is an after thought. MS got fed up with Sony saying only their console would play games and movies in HD, so they thought hmmmm, let's release an add on for the rival format, just to stir things up! It will be interesting to see how many they sell and what the price will be. It's expected to go for around $199 Last edited by partridge; 08-23-2006 at 08:18 AM. |
