I'm not talking about listening to the radio while driving to work or at home while washing the car or doing your homework. I'm talking about honest to god sitting (or lying) down with a good pair of head phones and actually LISTENING to music, paying careful attention to the performances, the production, the vocals, etc. How many of you still do that? I know for those of us who are older, it's easy in our busy lives to allow music to just be something we listen to incidentally while we do other, more "important" things. I'm just curious as to how many of you still set aside time to really listen to music. To make THAT the event unto itself and not just something you do casually while doing other things.
For those who cannot honestly answer "yes" to this question let me encourage you to set aside time, even if it's just a couple of times a week. For one it's a GREAT stress reliever. Also I think you will re-discover your love for music all over again if you allow yourself to really focus on nothing else but listening. |

I do! Nothing beats coming home from a days work and firing up the ol' sound system and lose yourself in your favorite music. Usually right before bed, I will also put on the headphones and listen to a few tracks too. When you actually sit there and "listen," its amazing how much more involved the music sounds. How you can pick out certain instruments and how much more "live" it sounds.

Depends.
I'm not one to really pay that much attention to quality vocals or lyrics, but I primarily enjoy listening to beats, percussion, melodies, harmony etc; I guess it's the overall sound and structure of music that I enjoy. Sometimes it's good enough for background listening while I work on stuff, but there are some evenings where I'll sit, listen to some songs I like, and try to get inspired by the sound. |

This thread is a bit of an eye-opener. It's made me realize that I don't listen to music as well as I should be.
Like others here, I have it on all the time. It is only when I have a recent purchase that I try to listen to the lyrics and figure out what the song means. Especially on the ones I really like. Driving shouldn't count for me because I am concentrating on that too much to actually listen. At home I have stations or ipod on, but I am usually doing something and it's basically background music at that point. I like chillin on the deck with the boombox cranked, but there's usually conversation going on. Last edited by Scarriere; 10-09-2012 at 03:55 AM. Reason: correction |

Every day. I used to watch 1 or 2 movies a night for the longest time but found myself missing something. Now, music is with me all the time and I would say that at least 1 hour a day is dedicated to it. Even when I'm on here, I still listen to music and I mean listen. Nothing more rewarding than playing that special album that fits the mood. I actually rarely if ever listen to songs, it's albums. Even in the car, no radio for me (except the occasional times) it's albums on a USB key.
I am at a point where I might catch 2 movies in a week now. Music is life, and it never lets you down. |

One of my favorite things to do when I'm home alone. Put on some music, kick back in my recliner, close my eyes and listen. My favorites are surround format Blu-ray audio, DVD-A and SACD. Nothing better than getting totally enveloped by the music. Give me 45 minutes, the blu-ray of Wish You Were Here, DVD-A of Farewell to Kings or Brothers in Arms SACD and all the cares of the world are gone.
Don't get me wrong I enjoy watching a good concert on Blu-ray or DVD and listening to a good 2 channel CD. I had got to the point that music was mainly a background thing until I upgraded the home theater, mainly for movies at the time. But having a decent sound system again has rekindled my interest in music. 5.1 Hi-Rez music is just the icing on the cake. |

I often listen to music while lying in my bed durning the evening after work. But like most people I play music while driving or doing work around the house or browsing the web. It's very different listening to music when you focus on the music everyone should try it

I listen all the time. I've been enjoying the DVD-A ELP & Tarkus discs Steve Wilson tweeked and just love listening to all 3 discs in each set. I listened to these recordings when they were released in vinyl, tape, CD, and now DVD-A. I wish all music was available in hi-rez formats now.

I just started (well maybe little less than 2 yrs in) really listening to music. I mean sitting in the sweet spot of a well sorted, well calibrated system and JUST LISTEN. If I am in town, Saturday mornings are my music listening sessions, though not limited to Saturday mornings. My wife goes to yoga, and my dog is napping off her breakfast
![]() To be honest, this is one of the advantages of vinyl. Even though it sounds like a PITA that you only have around 4-5 tracks per side (especially since I came from digital music), it taught me to listen to music rather than just play music in the background from my digital playlist of hundreds of songs. When I play a vinyl, I am keenly aware that I have to invest TIME in listening b/c there are only a few tracks, and the record isn't flipping itself. I think the other factor in listening is having your system dialed in as best as you can. Having the imaging perfect and as natural/flat of a speaker response really gives you that experience that the artist is in the room. Again, it isn't about the amount of money you throw at a system, but how you calibrate and position the system. Sorry for the ramble. ![]() |

I take the time to listen to music faithfully about 3-4 times per week, and sometimes more. My listening room is strictly analogue (vinyl) and I have several thousand LP's to choose from. I'm usually in there for several hours.

As an artist I find music helps to calm the mind and keep on track, especially music with distinct atmospheres. But I was picking out soundscapes since a youngan, always interested in the likes of Enya, Clannad who at times earlier in their careers were very haunting.
