Hey guys,
Brand new Canadian collector. Found the site because I'm working with the ShelfLife.net team recruiting curators to build out a definitive list of all the steelbooks on the planet, alongside our awesome collection management tools. (If you want to help curate, kind of like being a wikipedia editor, ping us at shelflife.net/curator) Anyway, I was wondering if there is a thread that defines the definitive edition for a given movie. For instance, the best possible Steelbook in any language for Django Unchained. I'm assuming this would be somewhat subjective but figured the community would be mostly in sync on which one ticked all the boxes (best cover art, all versions included, region free, etc.). Thoughts? Apologies if I missed an obvious thread somewhere... Cheers James |

Why do you say it would have to be about specs only? Much of the commentary on this and other boards seems to revolve around art preference.

So not only are you judging highly subjective criteria (which art is 'best') but also trying to decide which is more important - the steelbook itself or the contents. Personally I don't think anyone could settle on it but, if someone were to attempt this list, then there should be two categories for each film -Best Steelbook (Packaging) and Best Steelbook (Content). That way both bases are covered and people know what they're getting. (And let's not forget that some people also confuse what is the best release with which is the rarest or most valuable, because that's what collecting is to some people - so there's something else...) Well of course if you care enough about the film to want the best version, you should get the best looking SteelBook, and then if the best transfer is some other edition you should get that and put it in the SteelBook. DUH.

Sounds like we're headed in the right direction. I propose the following ratings (scale of 1-10) for folks vote on a given version and leave it to the better informed to correct me:
Cover Art & Detail (Embossing, Debossing, Reservoir Dogs Gas Can Sexy, etc) Internal Art & Printed Materials (Internal Covers, Extras) Rarity (Single or Multi-Country Release, Known Print Size, Numbered?) Content Quality (How Comprehensive? Does it have the most stuff?) Non-subjective attributes: Multi-Format Support (Does it provide all the versions?) What Am I Missing? Let's do a test run: Thor: Dark World, discuss. |

That one is too easy. It's obviously the US Best Buy edition, which not only had debossing but also had the title on the spine. Also appears to be the rarest, and included 3D/2D/Digital. And I didn't get one.

See, I've already learned something!
How about The Avengers, Hellboy and Man of Steel? As for "who decides", the answer is "everyone". The goal is agreement, but the discussion is what gets us there and it's hardly meant to be a perfect achievement...chime in folks. |

To do this properly every steelbook that would enter the list would have to be voted on by forum members. I don't know if that would be possible, though, in terms of compiling a big list of titles.
Also... I agree with what others have said. It's too subjective. "This cover is best." "I like this matte over that glossy." "No, Glossy is best!" etc. Not to mention disc contents. And as mentioned, "value" in terms of both lower price vs super rare steelbooks. Which some steelbook collector's would undoubtedly consider a criteria in either spectrum. |

I'm unclear why anyone would fear or undervalue discussion founded on subjective opinion. From what I've seen Steelbook forums revolve around such discussion. We don't need everyone to vote outright right off the bat. I'm only inviting everyone to start voicing opinions in this thread that can later be compiled and potentially voted upon. We may just end up launching such functionality on ShelfLife to be more helpful to the community as a whole. In the meantime, I'm certain opinions from experienced members will clarify options for noobs like myself.
GenPion, what do you consider your top 10 Steelbooks and why? How do you prioritize for adding to your collection? |
