So what westerns would you like to see or you think should be remade? As examples, True Grit was remade 2010 and a lot of people seem to enjoy it due to the "earthiness" of Jeff Bridges. While I enjoy it, I still prefer the 1969 John Wayne version. The Magnificent Seven was also remade in 2016 with great effect and changing the setting of the story a bit. I enjoyed that one and I can still enjoy the 1960 original just as much. On the other end of the scale, The Dawn Rider, a 2012 remake of the 1935 John Wayne movie, was pretty much a failure. Cimarron was remade in 1960 based on the original from 1931, and although the 1961 version ranks higher on IMDB, there could be a lot of reasons for that, none necessarily indicating a "better" film. While some might not consider it a "western", The Revenant from 2015 is essentially a retelling of Man in the Wilderness from 1971, and of course Leo, along with better effects and overall budget, made a very impressive movie.
Now, there are a lot of other westerns that have been remade, and there are lots of westerns I probably wouldn't bother with as I don't believe they would be any better no matter how much effort you threw at it (I know, saying that makes me look narrow minded), it got me thinking, what other westerns out there deserve a remake: hotter female leads (maybe hunkier male leads?), bigger explosions (which might not be true to what existed at the time), CGI where none formerly existed, better actors, better sets, an overall larger budget? Have at it, but try to explain your reasons for a more interesting thread. I can start with one I love that still hasn't even seen a BD release. Mackenna's Gold. Great movie, great acting, some great actors the likes of we won't see again, horrible effects and likely a few scenes that could be made better or somewhat glossed over/eliminated without detracting at all from the story. What some green screen or just a much larger budget couldn't do to that one! A remake would not diminish the original in my eyes, and it just might help attract an entirely new audience to the western. |
