Default Recommend me a Home Theater Sound

I currently have an older Sony home theater system which sounds great but unfortunately it is HUGE! Has the big block subwoofer and the tall side speakers and the large square rear speakers with a huge center speaker lol. It is more suitable for a stereo system in a game room than a theater system in a living room

I am interested in getting something small and we kind of want to keep it simple. I was looking at the Bose Cinemate (to give you an idea of what size I'm looking at) but it was given poor reviews. I want something that fills the room with awesome clarity and a subwoofer that really hits without distorting. I am not concerned with true surround sound as I don't want to mount speakers on my walls or run wire across wooden floors.

Can someone recommend me a good system? Thanks!

the best things i can suggest are these:

if style and size are a big deal for you go check out the home theater pics thread and check out what other people have
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=8088

also go in store listen to what many different stores have in stock. don't listen to anyones opinion about what is good and what is not, even about bose (i don't like them). find out what YOU like. then go to this site and look them up to get them for less

www.shopzilla.com

research is necessary to make the best decision when it comes to home theater equipment. thats why informed people choose blu ray.

Do yourself a favor and search for your local yellow pages. Find yourself an audio dealer selling Paradigm or Energy brand speakers.

I absolutely love Paradigm, and find they are an incredible value. I purchased a pair of Mini-Monitors, and a PDR-12 subwoofer (I think the model # has changed) and the sound is outstanding. Paradigm is not the typical BestBuy fodder -- it's a step up from that. I have them matched with an Onkyo amp.

Other people like B&W, although it has never impressed me. Must be my ears.

You really should get to a store selling these and audition a system. By the way, if you live close to Canada, and can drive there, you'll save about 30%. Don't ship them, as customs will kill you (assuming you're American) and tax you big time.

Also, the Paradigm Cinema series is small like Bose, but sounds much better. Cost is comparable (or even less!)

I like the Mythos line of speakers from Definitive. The come in many different sizes and can be mounted cleanly on the wall or place on floors. I've installed alot of these for customers and the included bracket and template make it a breeze to setup.

my best advice for you is that get those receiver that support wireless surround speakers. Surround sound play a big part in any home theater, it's a MUST!
or you could get one of those yamaha center speaker that can throw surround sound all around the room without having the need to mount speakers behind you. BestBuy should have it.
but yeah, seriouslly, i can't even watch a movie without surround sound, it just doesn't feel right. lol

...as nice as wireless speakers would be to have, the one downside is potential interference with the signal...nothing better than audio cutting out during a fast action scene.

You wont get room filling sound with something as small as Blose. Also you would definitely need a good size sub to not have distortion. I would recommend Paradigm, Ascend acoustics,Svsound, etc..

I have 5 Thiel MCS1's and an SS2 subwoofer, and they are indeed LARGE. Trouble is, for truly dynamic sound you need big speakers...ESPECIALLY the front middle channel. Thats where almost all the dialog comes from, and most special FX (i.e. explosions, car crashes, etc.) start from before being mixed out to either side or rear. My advice would be to wire the perimeter of the room (pull out the floor molding and jam the wires under the sheetrock) and replace the floor molding. Bigger speakers are truly better!

I just bought my Denon 3808ci today... what a Receiver... big difference with my 2 years old Yamaha. The Audyssey MultiXT does wonder here with all Paradigm Speakers (except the sub).
