Default Wraiths Of The Broken Land

http://deadline.com/2016/05/ridley-s...ox-1201752356/

Quote:
EXCLUSIVE: 20th Century Fox has closed a big deal for screen rights to the S. Craig Zahler novel Wraiths Of The Broken Land, so that it could reunite the dream team behind the Best Picture nominated hit The Martian. Ridley Scott has made a deal to direct with Drew Goddard to write the script. The film will be produced by Scott Free’s Michael Schaefer, Genre Films’ Simon Kinberg and Aditya Sood. The similarities to the comparatively upbeat The Martian end there. Wraiths of the Broken Land is a Western, the attempt to reclaim two kidnapped sisters forced into prostitution. It is a desperate rescue and plunges the protagonists into dark places in a book that combines horror, noir and Asian ultra violence. Scott was eager to work again with Goddard. The Martian grossed just north of $500 million worldwide.

Steve Asbell is overseeing for Fox. The book is the author’s followup to his Western novel A Congregation of Jackals. WME reps Scott and UTA reps Goddard.

Sounds like it work. They're a good team. Story could clearly translate well to the big screen (note: I haven't read it; I'm just going by the summary) if done properly.

I hope this sees the light of day.

A Ridley Scott horror/western written by Drew Goddard? I'm totally in.

Can't wait to see S. Craig Zahler complain and say how he could have done a far better job that Ridley Scott.

This is so depressing.

It seems that, two and a half years ago, Sir Riddles went as far as scouting locations for this in Spain.

But hey, we'll be getting a ****ing young Merlin Disney movie!

In the span of two years, studios have changed. I'm sure Ridley could come back to this. But I rather a diff director take the reigns.
Plus the future films from Ridley sound more compelling with both Gucci and Kitbag. And if he can make it, Battle of Britain would be a terrific send off for him.

You on a Scott roll? I don’t mind. Just seeing you bump a few of his threads!

If not Ridley, then Zahler should direct it. It's based on his novel, after all.

Haha yeah. In a way. I've been watching his newer stuff again. Plus been digging the scores to his newer work. And I really want that new Retrospective book on him.
Sorry to anyone that was hoping this was new news about the film.

I greatly enjoy Zahler's work but I want him to either write original books or original films. If his work is to be adapted, I'm cool with someone else trying to bring his prose to life.

Scott still wishes to make a western, though it probably won't be this one.

Quote:
DEADLINE: I recall you telling me of a lunch you had with Clint Eastwood about how much you loved Rawhide. Is a Western on your wish list?
SCOTT: Oh, my God, I’d love to do a Western. You know when I mentioned that to Clint, he’d forgotten he’d done ****ing Rawhide.

DEADLINE: You got a Western in mind?
SCOTT: There’s a couple of Westerns that circle the wagons. I think Kevin Costner had the right thing going where he wanted to respect what has happened to the Native American. I’d like to go down that route because the Western should be about the wilderness. I love the wilderness, going that far back. Jeremiah Johnson was another I’ve watched several times with Bob Redford. That was a story of evolution, how a man comes in to try and make his way in an unforgiving territory, and fundamentally, people who didn’t quite understand why they were there. But they weren’t bad people. You’ve got to sort that out. Who did what to who, and it’s a massive case of xenophobia, right?

Is there a reason that Zahler isn't been given the directors chair on this? Bone Tomahawk was outstanding. Read the book, and it really does need to be given a cinematic outing...

For a dead genre, they sure are making a lot of westerns lately

I feel like he would want to do his own thing and tell a different story. I know he's a got a mini-series western he's been wanting to make.

I think it would be cool for different directors to adapt his novels as he makes original films.
