Default Worth to exchange if case came broken?

I recently purchased the Mad Max Trilogy from a local retailer. The discs are fine but the case came broken. The top hinge of the flap tray for the 1st and 2nd disc is broken off and so the flap is only hanging by one hinge. Also the hub for the second disc has missing triangles of plastic from the hub holder on that same flap tray. Do I have bad luck if like 1 out of every 10 blu-rays I purchased so far comes with a broken case? There are a couple of dents on the metal box but I don't care about because I was planning on throwing the metal box away because I don't really care about the metal box as long as there actually is a blu-ray case inside and I saw a youtube unboxing video that show a blu-ray case inside the metal box. Am I being OCD for thinking about exchanging it for one with a non-broken case if the discs are fine, at least appear fine?

You could just buy a new case. They're fairly cheap.

The case shouldn't be broken when you buy something new (or, used for that matter). Exchange it.

No, especially if the case can no longer hold the disc. I exchanged with Amazon when I received a BD with the spindles that hold the disc all broken off. It was impossible for the case to hold the disc and even though it didn't look too scratched up I wanted to be sure it would play alright. They responded to my email within 5 hours (in early December), overnighted a replacement with a UPS shipping sticker for the return. Easier than pie and very well done by Amazon.

If you bought it from a shop and it is badly damaged then I would certainly say take it back,if I ordered it on-line and it has damage then I accept it,things get damaged in the post,it's a case,I can easily replace it.

Same thing just happened to me. I ordered "The Sting" online and the case is entirely busted at the top...nothing is left of the entire top. I'm not going to mess with sending it back...will just buy a new case.

Depends on how badly the case is broken. I've had spines busted straight down the line and completely in half with spindles that don't hold the disc, and that's not acceptable.

Those little fipper trays tend to bust off a lot, so I just suck it up and deal with the inconvenience. I think it's a little absurd to exchange something over every little flaw. If the disc isn't damaged, it doesn't really matter.

That was one sentence folks. I also don't understand you saying "as long as there actually is a blu-ray case inside and I saw a youtube video that show a blu-ray case inside". Um, shouldn't you know it has a blu-ray case inside since you're talking about it? Am I missing something here?

Grammar, and especially punctuation, has become a lost art my friend. Among other things, I blame it on all the kiddies with their incessant texting, "smart" phones, and other B.S. getting in the way of their education. Their parents and schools are also to blame for allowing it.

Before I purchased the Mad Max Trilogy, I watched a youtube video of an unboxing of this product. That's how I found out that a blu-ray case was in the metal box. I don't care for the metal box and I plan on throwing it away when I'm done watching these movies.

I went back to the store to exchange my copy. The 2nd copy was in worse condition than the first copy because the 2nd copy had a loose disc and scratches on 2 of the discs, big dent on the back of the metal box that was covered by the description sheet, plus the blu-ray case was damaged, though not as damaged as the case from the 1st copy. The 3rd copy is fine as the discs and case are fine. So I finally came out with a good set after the third try.

Nobody should have to buy a replacement case, if the blu-ray was purchased brand new from a retailer. If damages were incurred while the product was in transit, then it should be returned for an exchanged.

But is it worth the hassle? While the cases should be intact, I'd rather just swap it out with one of my replacement cases I have on hand. The exception being if it is a non standard case, then I'd go the exchange route.

Usually when this happens to me, I just buy replacement cases from the website Sleeve Town

Yes he can, but why should he? He shouldn't have to pay extra for a new case just because it was damaged when he bought it.

OP, exchange it!

I agree with this, the OP said it's from a local retailer, so I'd say just take it back and get an exchange. But ordering online you take a chance, if the discs and cover artwork are pristine, then I'd just get a replacement case. Who knows, you could insist on an exchange and the replacement case could be fine but the artwork could be creased or damaged then you get into the endless cycle of exchanges and ever increasing nitpicking of the replacement items.

Buying a movie from a retailer and taking it home to discover the case is damaged - that can usually be avoided by just inspecting the outer case carefully and gently shaking it to your ear to listen for anything that may be loose. I do this all the time when I buy Blu-rays at Best Buy. Now, the key word is gently - you don't want to violently shake a DVD or BD for obvious reasons. There's nothing you can do when buying online - just hope that it gets to you in one piece.

Exchanging because of damage is entirely dependent on the situation. If it's a regular (generic) plastic case, you can easily replace the case with another one. Broken hinges, missing hub teeth, split spines, dents - these are all annoying but easily remedied with replacement. Specialty packaging, OTOH is another matter. I purchased a metalpack from Diabolik and there's a dent along the top plus the front (face) of the case is slightly misaligned. It closes fine but it's still misaligned. It looks as if it was thrown or fell fairly hard. Do I want to go through the hassle of sending it back? I'll likely just keep it - it's a limited edition and the retailer will probably not want to send me another one. I guess I could try but it'll be a hassle - something I don't want to deal with. The disc is fine and the case still closes so I'm not 100% screwed. I can live with that.

you pick your fights

a replacement case or whatever costs like half a dollar when you buy them online so are you going to spend a lot more than that on shipping/gas and/or time over it?

sry my time is more valuable than that

if it was some special packaging that you can't replace or they did something to piss you off then I get it exchanged

This right here. It is far more convenient just to buy a replacement case.

It's just the principle! Whenever I buy something brand new, I want the entire product in brand new condition (without any defects or damages) when I receive it, regardless how minor the damage may be. I'm the one who's paying my money, and I should get exactly what I want! For instance: If you buy a brand new 2014 vehicle, and drive it home and detect, the CD Player is not working, or have some other mechanical defect, are you going to keep it anyway, just because you're too busy and don't want spend anymore of your time, or too lazy to take it back to exchange it? Everybody's time is valuable, I will be standing up for what is right.

Like Tony208 said, you pick your fights. You can't compare a broken blu-ray case to a component in a new car. Can you cheaply go out and buy a new CD player for a few cents or quickly fix it yourself? Of course not. Yeah, in principle when you buy something it should be perfect, but sometimes you just have to let things go and use some common sense.
