Questions about posting spoilers

Hello this was brought up in a thread here on this website which led to this big long incident. So to clarify not just for me but for everyone else on this website. What is the rule about posting spoilers of a movie in a thread? Are you allowed to and if so how long until after the movie comes out on blu ray do you have to keep putting the spoiler tag?

I would like to know when a 'spoiler' officially expires...is courtesy extended forever?...once the Blu-ray is released and a reasonable amount of time has passed there needs to be some common sense applied...like I stated before, is Empire Strikes Back, The Godfather, Indiana Jones etc spoilers?...I say 4 weeks after the Blu-ray is released then all bets are off...courtesy goes both ways and the burden should not have to fall on the masses to not spoil the movie for a few

It's not like it's hard to not openly post about spoilers, there is a button that takes a mere second to apply.

Well you were posting in a thread designated for the Blu-ray release, which should be used to discuss things regarding that, not spoilers about the movie. If you want to discuss major plot details, then go to the thread in the "movies section" and use your common sense to tag your spoilers seeing as how the movie just came out and not everyone saw it in the theaters.

I also have a spoiler question... what if someone posts a spoiler for upcoming TV episodes?

[Show spoiler]William H. Macy's character, the father of the family of the show is about is facing terminal liver disease and it appears that death is knocking. Well I guess he was on a talk show and said he wasn't going to die this season. So a poster posted it as much, without tags, and said it wasn't a spoiler because he said it in front of millions of viewers. IMO it' is most clearly a spoiler, one that I'd rather of not known, no matter how "obvious" it is.

Besides noting his poor and inconsiderate behavior, is there anything else that can be done? I thought about using the report post button, but it made no mention of spoilers so I didn't want to mis-use the function.

I don't go into threads of movies and/or TV shows unless I've seen all of the current episodes to avoid seeing unwanted spoilers. If it's ok for people to spoil future episodes than that'd be great to know so I could know to avoid them all together.
