USA Are you region free?

Mod note : Credit to zbinks for starting the previous thread. People were asking for more poll options, so here you go.

Do you own a Blu-Ray player that is capable of playing Blu-Rays from each of the three Blu-Ray region codes?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray...e#Region_codes

  • A Includes most North, Central, and South American and Southeast Asian countries plus Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong, Macau, and Korea.
  • B Includes most European, African, and Southwest Asian countries plus Australia and New Zealand.
  • C Includes the remaining central and south Asian countries, as well as China and Russia.

Currently, I'm not region free! Importing blu-rays from all over the world, can be very expensive and besides, there are not that many international blu-ray releases that I would be interested and anxious to import, if I did have a region player.

Thanks for the new options Detroit as I do have two region free PC drives (thanks to AnyDVD HD) and my monitor can take PAL signals.

I have a regular blu ray player as well as a region free one, and I can't imagine not having the freedom to order the titles overseas that are not out here yet, some of which might never see a Region A release.

I have a region-free DVD player -- it was a $30 Phillips I bought at Costco that allowed me to enter a code to make it region free, and the upscaling quality is quite stellar. If I could find an affordable Blu-ray player that allowed me to do this, I'd probably go for it.

Agreed, and seconded.

I don't buy a ton of imports, but should I want to, it's nice having the option.

Sony makes a region free BD player with Wi-Fi and 3D (5100) for $220 on Amazon. Tough to beat.

Sony doesn't make Region Free BD players. That's a player with a hardware add-on installed by another entity.

Region free capability is against the Blu-ray Disc license.

My region free player is an old Best Buy Insignia. Can't beat it.

The innards are still Sony and they are the ones selling it. I would never buy an Insignia as their FW updates are not always regular.

You can get an LG 3D player with wi fi that's been modified to be region free (for both blu rays and DVDs) for $175 at 220-electronics.com here. I got mine from them about a year ago, still works great. For those that don't need 3D (either because they don't care or because they already have a 3D player and don't need 3D blu rays from other regions), there are cheaper options there too.

My Panasonic plays all regions and I'm not quite sure why. Its technically not a "region free" player. I've updated once after I purchased it, and never again. I've tested all regions of blurays and DVDs, and it never fails.

See... Maybe you should look again....

See where it says GLOBAL ELECTRONICS. It may be a Sony player, but it is not region free from Sony. Any of the regulars here will tell you that it's against the BD Association license for manufacturers to make region free players out of the box.

As for Insignia, they were region free due to a remote control hack. It still has the original factory firmware to protect the region free capability and it only cost me $35.00 new. So far, it has played every single region disc I have thrown at it.

Haven't seen the need to find a region-free Blu-ray player personally yet. Even though I import decently frequently (I always buy big box sets from Amazon UK - not only do I usually save up to 50%, I prefer the packaging), and I haven't found one yet that was actually region coded. It would take something major for me to care enough to invest in one.

I do have a region-free stand-alone DVD player, but only to watch my imported Buffy UK sets (Seasons 4 - 7 are in widescreen there). I was able to make it region free with a remote code. I never imported DVDs other than that. One of these days I'm going to rip them and just watch them digitally so I have one less box hooked up to my TV.

My laptop can play region free blu ray its a MEDION AKOYA P7815.
The screen is nice to watch films on a handy 17 inch 1080P portable player.
