United Kingdom Le Jour se Lève Blu-ray (75th Anniversary Edition)

Le Jour se Lève Blu-ray PRE-ORDER

Street date: July 21. Courtesy of StudioCanal.

Le Jour se Leve was recently restored in 4K by StudioCanal in association with Eclair. The sound was restored by Diapason.

The new 4K restoration will be introduced in the Classics section of the Cannes Film Festival later this month.

Quote:
Synopsis: Jean Gabin plays a worker involved with the mistress of a seedy showman (Jules Berry), whom he kills after a jealous struggle over an unfortunate flower girl. As the police close in on him, he barricades himself in a small room, going over the events which led him into such desperate straits. Marcel Carne directed this French classic, which was remade by Hollywood in 1947 as The Long Night.

Didn't expect this, which makes it all the more exciting. Pre-order's gone straight in - there's not enough films like this on Blu-ray.

Fantastic! I feared that, like La Bête Humaine, Studio Canal would only release this in France and I'm very pleased to see that my fears were unfounded.

Here's to hoping it's a StudioCanal Collection title! Ain't had one of those since The Servant last year.

Alas, it won't be a StudioCanal Collection title. According to MovieMail they've discontinued the series. Check the relevant thread for more of this upsetting news.

I loved this film when I saw it on DVD a few years ago. I'll definitely pick up the BD - well, assuming they do a good job of it. Fingers crossed.

I just received a copy of the UK release and was surprised to discover that, unlike the French edition, no booklet at all was included. Is this the case with the entire run of the UK release or did I just get a bum copy?

I must have bought my UK copy within the month of its release, and it had no booklet.

Sorry to ressurect an old thread... A lovely film. I bought the blu-ray based on the review here that praised it. I have to say, however, that I am quite disappointed with the restoration on display.

Watching it, I felt there was something weird about it and the restoration featurette unfortunately confirms my suspicion. While the grading is excellent to my eye, too much DNR has been applied. It looks acceptable on the screenshots below and some might prefer it (as the technician who says that the second gen. source was "too grainy"), even in spite of the fact that it obviously removes detail/sharpness and makes the image blurry in comparison to the fresh scan. And I would be willing to swallow it as a "move" towards the original negative, which would likely be less grainy.

It is in motion, however, where it all falls apart. With whatever they applied, the grain tends to group into chunks that move separately around the image and it looks very unnatural. Organic quality of the image gone. (It also seems to me that it makes the inherent instability of the source stand out, but this is secondary.) And the thing simply becomes ugly. I don't understand how the reviewer missed this...

The restoration technician says that the "extensive" grain is okay on a "large screen" and the clean-up was done on the untouched scan. Did anybody by any chance see a DCP of this? While unlikely, is there any chance that the Spanish blu-ray does not have the grain reduction applied?

Agreed. Both this and Port of Shadows (which I like even better as a film) have a smeary quality that is very disappointing. I wonder if that's why Criterion didn't renew the licenses for them.
